New try at the upgrading. I thought that the test wiki's inconsistent state could be due to that the shared tables need to be disabled during the upgrade or there will be trouble. So I made a copy of the shared tables and uploaded them into the test wiki before running the upgrade and the test wiki got up just fine. Now that I have tested that mw:Extension:Wikibase works in the test wiki and editing and uploading work on both wikis I'm happy to say that the wiki family is happily at the newest Mediawiki version 1.33

Friday 2019-09-27

In the morning wrote this ticket to the Wikimedia Phabricator ticketing system titled 'Unable to upgrade wiki family of 2 wikis from 1.32.0 to 1.33.0 due to DB structure being different than the upgrade.php expects' and then various people helped and expert w:User:Anomie provided SQL to fix the issue of the ticket. Big thanks to Anomie for single-handedly putting the database of the test wiki into a consistent and upgradeable state.

Not all was well yet. Running the upgrades on the 2 wikis of the wiki family this development wiki was fine, but the test wiki ended up in an inconsistent state e.g. Main Page missing, revisions missing.

• Made backups and attempted the upgrade again. Did not work. Got help from #mediawiki. Making a Phabricator ticket was suggested by duesen @ #mediawiki. Thank you mw:User:Duesentrieb for all the help.

Saw a small piece on Open Food Facts on France24 a couple of days ago and started an article on it. It is a copyleft effort for "foods and beverages only"-policy and focus on health stuff. • Consumium free social media instances are now migrated from the old virtual server in Netherlands to a new virtual server in Germany. Cost of running them went substantially down and resources went up. The only negative thing about the new server is that the hosting company does not use renewable electricity, but the fact that the data center has ground water cooling mitigates this a bit as it saves a lot of electricity. • If someone else is wondering about a few edits happening which show a difference of few bytes negative in the Recent Changes, but when you click the diff it says that there is no difference: I was naturally worried when I saw the first occurrence of this and asked around in #mediawiki and the explanation is that around Mediawiki version 1.10 the line termination characters were reformed and thus these weird edits can happen when someone edits an article in a way that replaces the old line termination character with the new, shorter, ones and then Recent Changes sees a difference in the size, but the diff does not look at how the lines are terminated and concludes that nothing has been changed. • Upgraded this wiki and the Test wiki (the only 2 members of a wiki family) to the latest stable Mediawiki (Release notes for 1.32). There was some trouble when upgrading the test wiki with 'php update.php --wiki=testwiki' exited with an error stating that the updater tried to update the wrong database (!), but after banging my head at the keyboard for a while I figured out this may be due to the test wiki sharing some tables from this development wiki and that indeed was the case.
