3GPP is technical standardisation body to develop so called 3RD Generation Mobile Services and it's members are ARIB, CWTS, ETSI, T1, TTA and TTC

"What it means to the layperson"

  • Files that are suffixed .3gp contain a new video format accessible using the H.263-codec.
  • MMS or Multi Media Message (available for GSM, GPRS and 3G-networks depending on your provider) uses this format for video delievery and there are also indicators that this standard is gaining stronghold in Japan too.
  • It can be played back or recorded (at low quality due to the lack of processing power) on some mobile phones or on your computer with the following softaware:
