Talk:Main Page: Difference between revisions

discussion should be at What Consumerium needs first, then we need multiple main pages, and a decent front page at http://consumerium.org - which New Trolls are welcome to prototype!
(Welcome, DanKeshet, but do not change the Main Page of the Development Wiki for end user purposes - leave /wiki/ alone but change http://consumerium.org front page instead)

I'm new and don't want to step on toes by editing the main page, esp. if I have a different vision of what this should be.  Do you mind if I give it a go and you can revert?  Or should I discuss this somewhere else?  DanKeshet 22:08, 10 Mar 2004 (EET)

:Please do not edit the Main Page of the Development Wiki to focus on end user concerns.  This should be at http://consumerium.org itself - the REAL front page.  The user doesn't want to become a wiki contributor to look up information such as you note.  Right now all that is there is an ad for Wikipedia that assumes you already know what a "wiki" is, etc., which drives away most users.  It MUST change, and it MUST change NOW.  So if you want to prototype an HTML page for http://consumerium.org that would be very very welcome.  There's some comment on it here, do a search or two, it has some non-obvious name like "things to do"
:We welcome trolls and encourage the New Troll point of view.  So please be bold.  But keep scope in mind.  As one troll to another, we ask you please do not edit the Main Page of the Development Wiki to focus on end user concerns.  Its purpose is not to serve such end users.

:Long run, there are three different groups to serve, so there must be a Main Page User, Main Page Researcher and a Main Page Developer, and also a Main Page Troll possibly.
:What you're asking for should be at http://consumerium.org itself - the REAL front page.  The user generally doesn't want to become a wiki contributor to look up information such as you note.  Right now all that is there is an ad for Wikipedia that assumes you already know what a "wiki" is, etc., which drives away most users.  It MUST change, and it MUST change quickly - it's driving people away.  So if you want to prototype an HTML page for http://consumerium.org that would be very very welcome.  There's some comment on this at What Consumerium needs and that's the best place to discuss it.

:Notice at Meta-Wikipedia, a similar situation, you have a main page that is basically for developers and frequent contributors, and to find the stuff of general interest there's a subpage Main Page Neutral (neutral as to the interests it serves).
:As for this page, we are still trying to find people who share the development goals, and don't have enough.  If you think it can lay out the overall problem better, go ahead, but we really don't have a separate Signal Wiki (for signals we are sending out officially) or Research Wiki (for views we are compiling) yet, which is what you would want to be looking at.  And which just doesn't exist yet, we have few Consumerium:intermediate pages even, and no format for most of them.  We're working on it.  Please help us.

:You are quite right that Main Page style is lacking but there are three different groups to serve, so there must be a Main Page User, Main Page Researcher and a Main Page Developer, and also a Main Page Troll possibly for those concerns that are being consistently bounced off those pages.

:Notice at Meta-Wikipedia, a similar situation, you have a main page that is basically for developers and frequent contributors, and to find the stuff of general interest there's a subpage Main Page Neutral (neutral as to the interests it serves).  And a fair bit of troll discourse as well, though the sysop power structure tries to suppress it and censor anything that questions their so-called "virtual community".  We aren't doing that, and believe a troll-friendly approach (as also practiced at Recyclopedia and Metaweb) is going to work better to bring under-reported views to light.
