An environmental service payment is a direct payment for nature's services. It is typically made to a government jurisdiction or land owner to preserve such services, e.g. erosion prevention, which might otherwise be brought on by deforestation. Although they are open to some abuses, they and related non-timber forest product market development appear to be the only reliable way to prevent deforestation of fragile rainforest regions for cash.
