    EVALUATING

Cargo and Page Forms Considering mw:Extension:Cargo and mw:Extension:Page Forms for structured data in-wiki for SSFWIKI. Other alternative would be mw:Wikibase.

The case of SSFWIKI is much simpler whereas Consumerium's case is very complicated to start with because of the vast interoperability demands for the knowledge graphs. In SSFWIKI I would use Cargo mostly for storing metadata about outgoing links and generate user friendly lists from those.

Yaron Koren wrote Cargo and he has also written the 'Working with MediaWiki book at workingwithmediawiki.com. In the book the relevant parts are found in Chapter 16 - Cargo and Semantic MediaWiki and Chapter 17 - Page Forms.

The experience from setting up a simpler case would help me learn how it would be possible to solve the things that Consumerium needs to function.

Upgrade to MediaWiki 1.35.9 seems to have gone well[edit | edit source]

    Upgrade deemed complete.

Made backups and a snaphshot in preparation for upgrade to newest minor point version[edit | edit source]

Done, commencing upgrades with the wiki dedicated just to testing stuff.

    Tuesday 2022-12-06[edit | edit source]

Recovered from a backup from Saturday 2022-12-03T10:52:36.413442+00:00 and popping some things in manually from backups. No data was lost.

Made a snapshot and made backups, verified and distributed the backups.

    Saturday 2022-12-04[edit | edit source]

Attempted upgrade of this wikifamily of two, but the test wiki would not upgrade to the newest LTS, 1.39, so I needed to rollback the process, but it didn't go very well and the MediaWiki was left in internally inconsistent state and closed for editing.

    Friday 2022-12-02[edit | edit source]

The new LTS (1.39) came out two nights ago. Making backups and taking a snapshot in preparation for upgrades.

Making and verifying backups after resolving the thumbnailing problem on Consumerium.org developement wiki[edit | edit source]

    • I will look into how long that setting was like that and was there any rational reason for it

    Saturday 2022-05-28[edit | edit source]

Some problem with image thumbnailing noticed[edit | edit source]

Last night I uploaded some images and noticed that the thumbnailing system is not working as it should. Looking at Special:ListFiles I notice that if the images are small enough, they do not meet the thumnailing criteria (maybe). This is probably some software component failing silently i.e. without throwing an error message. I have reached out for help in irc. The other wikis are working fine, but they are on a completely different server.

Making, verifying and stashing backups and taking a snapshot[edit | edit source]

Going to make backups and also take a snapshot, while waiting for some help or some realization of what is wrong, how did it go wrong and how to fix it.

Done. Going to make a snapshot of the system disk as well. Jukeboksi (talk) 17:02, 28 May 2022 (CEST)

Finally enabled VisualEditor successfully[edit | edit source]

The solution given here phabricator:T270376#7365202 after the breakthrough discovery phabricator:T270376#7364419 by Func needed to be tweaked also with AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode to stop the mw:VisualEditor REST 404 errors exhibiting when trying to edit subpages. Adding AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode to the Apache 2.4 config inside of the <VirtualHost>-directive seems to yield a completely functioning VisualEditor setup.

This advice I found in mw:Extension:VisualEditor#Allowing VisualEditor on page titles containing slashes after it was kindly pointed out by an irc-goer in #mediawiki. So the documentation has been improved lately.

So two configuration changes to Apache2 were needed to successfully enable VisualEditor:

       AllowEncodedSlashes NoDecode

for VE to work with URL's with slashes in them

       RewriteEngine On

       RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI} !-f
       RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI} !-d
       RewriteRule ^(?:(?!rest.php/).)*$ %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/w/index.php [L]

for REST traffic to work as intended and naturally also short URLs working (MediaWiki is residing in w/ and wiki URL is /wiki/) and no more REST 404 errors at all.

    November[edit | edit source]

    Saturday 2021-11-27[edit | edit source]

    Enabled VisualEditor[edit | edit source]

I finally enabled mw:VisualEditor on all wikis. I'm still getting REST 404 errors with VisualEditor, but I have verified that those exhibit only when trying to edit a subpage. When trying to edit a subpage with VE, it fails with REST 404 when loading the VE, but if trying to create a subpage with VE it fails only after the final "save page".

This is an matter of importance, because mobile users have been unable to edit any pages due to an issue with mw:Extension:ConfirmEdit and mw:Extension:MobileFrontend not quite playing catch with each other.

I was alerted to the issue of no captcha by a user of the Consumerium development wiki on ciumd:User:Jukeboksi/Log/2021#Sunday 2021-02-07.

I filed a ticket on it ciumd:MediaWiki/Tickets/Phabricator T274807 - No CAPTCHA from ConfirmEdit served for users that use MobileFrontend.

I did try to enable VisualEditor on 2021-05-13 but run into 404 problems regarding the REST-traffic, as have many other people. See catalogue phabricator:T266971 - "Error contacting the Parsoid/RESTBase server" (HTTP 404/403) and similar errors (catalog). The weird thing about these 404's was that they did not start to exhibit immediately after enabling VisualEditor, nor did they exhibit consistently.

It seems that the 404 errors with the REST-communication used by VisualEditor are due to old style of apache2 rewrite engine settings.

For the problem of 404 errors in REST-communication I took the solution given here phabricator:T270376#7365202 after the breakthrough discovery phabricator:T270376#7364419 by Func.

This Apache configuration (snippet) in the VirtualHost directive in /etc/apache2/sites-available/000-website.tld worked for wikis where short URLs in the format of /wiki/ and the MediaWiki residing in /w/ and document root is one directory up from /w/

       RewriteEngine On

       RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI} !-f
       RewriteCond %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}%{REQUEST_URI} !-d
       RewriteRule ^(?:(?!rest.php/).)*$ %{DOCUMENT_ROOT}/w/index.php [L]

Thank yous to Func for solving this for us and Kghbln for asking the question in phabricator:T270376 and thanks to Bob, who brought to my attention the problem that mobile users were unable to edit wiki.

    • Making and verifying backups and taking a snapshot in preparation of trying out the recently found fix for the REST communication 404s that Visual Editor has been causing for many. At least in one particular case it turned out to be an Apache2 rewrite configuration issue. Will try it out in my private test wiki and if it works there then I'll enable it in an another wiki and if that works then probably roll out the Visual Editor to all wikis, as that will enable also mobile users to edit the wiki (an CAPTCHA issue of long standing, pointed out by a Consumerium.org development wiki user). See ciumd:Tickets and feature request#Tickets under observation for general outline of the situation.

    Sunday 2021-02-07[edit | edit source]

    • I was made aware today by a user on the Consumerium development wiki that there is a problem with invoking the mw:CAPTCHA for the mobile users, rendering mobile users unable to edit any pages. This is a semi-known issue in mw:Extension:MobileFrontend. There is an another minor issue to patch also. I'm looking for a solution or workaround to the problem for our mobile users and making backups now. Jukeboksi (talk) 16:08, 7 February 2021 (CET)

    • Put RedirectPermanent to their right places in Consumerium.org for all articles in the Apache settings of wiki.study. The old domain name will expire in 43 days time, so the search engines have time to give any possible existing "weight" onwards to Consumerium. Keeping the wiki on a subdomain of a domain though, because it will be very useful to find the right way to import the citation templates and possibly also infoboxen, since the only instructions I've found are for Importing Wikipedia infoboxes. It would be nice to get the infoboxes in User:Jukeboksi/BBA studies to work also. Jukeboksi (talk) 20:32, 30 July 2020 (CEST)

New try at the upgrading. I thought that the test wiki's inconsistent state could be due to that the shared tables need to be disabled during the upgrade or there will be trouble. So I made a copy of the shared tables and uploaded them into the test wiki before running the upgrade and the test wiki got up just fine. Now that I have tested that mw:Extension:Wikibase works in the test wiki and editing and uploading work on both wikis I'm happy to say that the wiki family is happily at the newest Mediawiki version 1.33

    Friday 2019-09-27[edit | edit source]

In the morning wrote this ticket to the Wikimedia Phabricator ticketing system titled 'Unable to upgrade wiki family of 2 wikis from 1.32.0 to 1.33.0 due to DB structure being different than the upgrade.php expects' and then various people helped and expert w:User:Anomie provided SQL to fix the issue of the ticket. Big thanks to Anomie for single-handedly putting the database of the test wiki into a consistent and upgradeable state.

Not all was well yet. Running the upgrades on the 2 wikis of the wiki family this development wiki was fine, but the test wiki ended up in an inconsistent state e.g. Main Page missing, revisions missing.

    • Consumium free social media instances are now migrated from the old virtual server in Netherlands to a new virtual server in Germany. Cost of running them went substantially down and resources went up. The only negative thing about the new server is that the hosting company does not use renewable electricity, but the fact that the data center has ground water cooling mitigates this a bit as it saves a lot of electricity. • If someone else is wondering about a few edits happening which show a difference of few bytes negative in the Recent Changes, but when you click the diff it says that there is no difference: I was naturally worried when I saw the first occurrence of this and asked around in #mediawiki and the explanation is that around Mediawiki version 1.10 the line termination characters were reformed and thus these weird edits can happen when someone edits an article in a way that replaces the old line termination character with the new, shorter, ones and then Recent Changes sees a difference in the size, but the diff does not look at how the lines are terminated and concludes that nothing has been changed. • Upgraded this wiki and the Test wiki (the only 2 members of a wiki family) to the latest stable Mediawiki (Release notes for 1.32). There was some trouble when upgrading the test wiki with 'php update.php --wiki=testwiki' exited with an error stating that the updater tried to update the wrong database (!), but after banging my head at the keyboard for a while I figured out this may be due to the test wiki sharing some tables from this development wiki and that indeed was the case. After I commented out the shared tables in LocalSettings.php the upgrade run just fine. Jukeboksi (talk) 21:21, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
    • Upgraded my semi-private study wiki to latest stable Mediawiki (1.32.0) and now proceeding to do the same for this development wiki. Downtime of maximum of few minutes expected. Jukeboksi (talk) 18:53, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
    • Extensions of Wordpressen at https://consumerium.org and https://kuluttajisto.consumerium.org updated. Jukeboksi (talk) 13:05, 14 February 2019 (UTC)
    • Apologies for the fact that the email sending system is broken. Probably due to that it uses encrypted connection to the SMTP-server with authentication and I (probably) changed the password and forgot to update it in LocalSettings.php. I will work to fix this issue today. Jukeboksi (talk) 12:44, 14 February 2019 (UTC)

    • Machine rebooted to new kernel. Going to take a snapshot of the system disk. This is going to cause a freeze, usually only for 3-4 minutes, but today the snapshotting of the other machine caused a freeze of 24 minutes, so the site may be unavailable for a while. • Today I did a small test to find out how much CPU load affects the power consumption of a laptop. I did this because I have recently resumed contributing my computational resources to the w:Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing or BOINC for short and am considering whether to add running BOINC to the things suggested to consumers who stumble upon the development wiki Main Page.
When, a Lenovo ThinkPad X230, was being mostly idle at 20-30% CPU utilization it consumed on average 30W or slightly under and when I put all cores into full labour with the w:hardware stress test program for Linux aptly named just 'stress' with the parameter '--cpu 4' (the CPU has 4 cores), which causes CPU utilization going to 100%. Under full workload on the CPU cores the computer used an average of 40W so cranking all CPU cores to the max causes an approximate +35% electricity consumption.
Also tested an another computer, a Dell Inpiron E6220 that had a very low power consumption of around 17W when idle with 10% of CPU in use and the stressing of the CPU to the max caused a much bigger rise in its electricity consumption: It went to 52W so that is a rise of +206% electricity consumption or +35W in terms of absolute consumption.
It is hard to draw a conclusion from a sample of only 2 computers, but it is clear that CPU utilization does play a major role in how much power the computer consumes. Jukeboksi (talk) 13:41, 23 October 2018 (UTC)

After a little while of disbelief I checked the page source and there were a few 'http://' items there. Then checked the LocalSettings.php and in fact there were a few 'http://' values hardcoded back from setting the wiki family up. Sorry about that. Update: mw:User:Karima Rafes promptly replied to my question on Mediawiki.org that only the SPARQL editor requires bootstrap and that it is somewhat "experimental".

Note to self: This is what I did to install the LinkedWiki:

    1. wget the LinkedWiki-extension, untar and cd to the directory LinkedWiki
    2. install yarn as follows

       curl -sS https://dl.yarnpkg.com/debian/pubkey.gpg | sudo apt-key add -
echo "deb https://dl.yarnpkg.com/debian/ stable main" | sudo tee /etc/apt/sources.list.d/yarn.list
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install yarn

    3. install node.js as follows

       curl -sL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_10.x | sudo -E bash -
       sudo apt-get install -y nodejs

    4. Install dependencies

       composer install --no-dev
       yarn install --production=true

This warned that bootstrap is not installed, which breaks the experimental SPARQL editor

    Update: Installed bootstrap

yarn add jquery # dependency of bootstrap
yarn add popper.js # dependency of bootstrap
       yarn add bootstrap@4.1.2
       yarn install --production=true

    and the

    yarn install --production=true

run without warnings. Today I'm going to test the LinkedWiki extension to see if it works. Jukeboksi (talk) 10:28, 24 July 2018 (UTC)

    Tuesday 2018-02-06[edit | edit source]

    • Today I installed a new wiki for testing Wikibase and maybe some other things. The new installation is part of a wiki family consisting of it and this wiki. The new wiki is configured to use a shared database so it gets its user table and some other tables from this wiki. Jukeboksi (talk) 18:09, 6 February 2018 (UTC)
    • Made, verified and distributed backups of this wiki and also snapshotted the system disk. Jukeboksi (talk) 12:51, 6 February 2018 (UTC)

    Saturday 2018-02-03[edit | edit source]

So I'm thinking to move as follows:

    1. Configuring a mw:Manual:Wiki family where all the wikis share the same Mediawiki installation so instead of needing to upgrade N wikis we need to upgrade only one. This is in preparation for making en.consumerium.org/wiki/
    2. mw:Manual:Shared database as that allows single login for a wiki family if one sets the $wgCookieDomain.
    3. Figuring out how to draw information from Wikidata
    4. Installing Wikibase repository and client on the enconsuwiki and the client on all future language versions of Consumerium.
    • mw:Manual:SessionManager and AuthManager. SessionManager enables alternatives to PHP's session management and AuthManager may be useful because it provides new user account creation from information from authentication by the 3rd party. Jukeboksi (talk) 11:10, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

    Friday 2018-02-02[edit | edit source]

    • A few outages today due to trying to install Wikibase Client Extension so that it would access the Wikidata repository. This turns out to be impossible at the moment. Restored the wiki back to a working state from few hour old backup twice. Wikidata does have dumps so next logical thought is "Can we mirror it?". Jukeboksi (talk) 00:07, 3 February 2018 (UTC)

    • End of this week and the week-end I have time to look at a good way to install and take into use the Wikibase client extension. The installation instructions say to use Composer but some say that it can be done without composer and that composer sometimes add unnecessary or risky dependencies. Jukeboksi (talk) 16:34, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
    • The favico.ico which is the small website logo you see in many if not most browser tabs. It is not in the right place because it is not showing up. Low priority thing I will look into starting tomorrow. Jukeboksi (talk) 16:04, 31 January 2018 (UTC)
Update: Favico.ico issue fixed. Jukeboksi (talk) 19:13, 2 February 2018 (UTC)

    Monday 2018-01-29[edit | edit source]

    • Letsencrypt.org is currently projecting a 2018-02-27 launch date for the wildcard certificates. It may be prudent to just make do with the unencrypted wiki until we can get a wildcard certificate which should make the management and adding wikis easier than individual certificates for each wiki. For the certificate renewal automation to work something needs to be done to how traffic landing on consumerium.org is dealt with. Currently the VirtualHost does a "permanent redirect" on all traffic coming to consumerium.org which is a problem since the ACME challenge that the Certbot needs to do to authenticate ownership of domain will not work with the current arrangement. Jukeboksi (talk) 14:43, 29 January 2018 (UTC)

    Sunday 2018-01-28[edit | edit source]

    • Managed to fix the email situation. Now the migration of this Development wiki to the new VPS dedicated solely for Consumerium would seem to be complete. Snapshotted the disk. Made, verified and distributed backups of this new server. Jukeboksi (talk) 19:43, 28 January 2018 (UTC)

    Saturday 2018-01-27[edit | edit source]

Migration to new server seems to have otherwise been a success but the NOCAPTCHA is slightly broken. Looking into it now. Jukeboksi (talk) 20:52, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

NoCAPTCHA is now working but the email-sending system is not. I've been trying to get the emails to work but no luck and now I need some sleep. Jukeboksi (talk) 23:39, 27 January 2018 (UTC)

Today I configured the mw:Extension:ConfirmAccount to be minimally annoying i.e. It asks a person requesting an account only for user name, email address and a short message. Previously it required "Real Name" (and we've never had a "require real names" rule or guideline).

Testing that it works I needed to solve the NOCAPTCHA many times and noticed how annoying and time consuming it is. This is hindering participation and a good strategy to minimize the annoyance caused by spambots while maintaining also minimum annoyance for genuine contributors. Friday 2018-01-26[edit | edit source]

    • The server's clock had drifted to 13 minutes in the future and that is now fixed. For me the wiki is one hour in the future right now but this may be due to my preferences. I am planning to migrate the wiki to the new Debian 9 server this weekend. That server has NTP enabled so there should be no incorrect time over there. Jukeboksi (talk) 17:51, 26 January 2018 (EET)

    • Wikibase enables a wiki to act as a structured data system like Wikidata does for the Wikimedia wikis. • Installed The ConfirmAccount extension to stop the bots that are able to pass the NoCAPTCHA from registering accounts en masse. In practice this means that account creation is moderated. • The user database of this Development Wiki is 68k rows long and out of those maybe 150-200 are real people and the rest just automatically registered in the crapflooding incidents of the turn of the decade before introducing CAPTCHA deterrent. This really speaks against using this botnet filled user database from being the mw:Extension:CentralAuth-oneJuboxi (talk) 17:27, 15 June 2017 (EEST)
Probably going to set up cmmns.consumerium.org (a Consumerium Commons setup) and en.consumerium.org (a Semantic MediaWiki) installation with mw:Extension:CentralAuth without risking this wiki going broken. Juboxi (talk) 15:10, 20 June 2017 (EEST)
    • The Björneborg hosting guys have released their new w:OpenStack based cloud platform: https://tavu.io/ It has better services with approximately the same prices as the old VPS infra has. Juboxi (talk) 21:21, 1 June 2017 (EEST)
    • Going to get on cracking on enabling mw:Extension:CentralAuth so we can move on to create an actual content wiki with Semantic MediaWiki enabled. Juboxi (talk) 19:28, 1 June 2017 (EEST)
    • Reinstalling laptop Kubuntu 17.04 again. This time gave it 16GB swap to see if it will actually start and run at reasonable speed with the wikidata.org complete dump to load into BlazeGraph that wants to register 17.2GB RAM so if I try with nothing much else running it should be able to start. • Made and verified backups of both production servers. Upgraded diaspora* to 0.6.6.0 Juboxi (talk) 19:11, 31 May 2017 (EEST)
    • Added the new competition to lists of price comparison services. Also doing a manual sweep of all links for stale or acquisitioned/mergered ones. Juboxi (talk) 13:09, 21 May 2017 (EEST)
    • I will go through the most important lists for changes and removed. Also going to harvest the Wikipedia categories again for any additions. Juboxi (talk) 12:55, 20 May 2017 (EEST)
Removals and changes DONE! Juboxi (talk) 17:48, 22 May 2017 (EEST)
    • I am going to try to make at least 5 SPARQL queries per week on the Wikidata endpoint that reveal something of interest for Consumerium services. Juboxi (talk) 12:50, 20 May 2017 (EEST)
    • Installed wikidata-query-rdf but that wanted to reserve 17.2GB of RAM which I don't have. Need to look into starting with smaller set of datasets than the complete Wikidata.org graph database. Juboxi (talk) 14:50, 16 May 2017 (EEST)
    • Installed Blazegraph on the storage server and on my laptop and both start up fine. Blazegraph enjoys ample memory I hear so I will probably try to load the Wikidata complete dataset (135GB !) without running out of diskspace. WMF uses Blazegraph for their query points. Juboxi (talk) 14:00, 16 May 2017 (EEST)
Blazegraph is what WMF uses for Wikidata services. Can handle up to 50 gigaedges per machine and is well extendable over many machines

    • Need to book some tickets so will use that as an opportunity to catch up on developments in the Lists of price comparison services and update accordingly. Juboxi (talk) 16:52, 13 May 2017 (EEST)
    • Upgraded this Development Wiki to 1.28.2. Lemme know if something seems broken. Juboxi (talk) 16:02, 13 May 2017 (EEST)
    • Something seemed slightly wrong with the GNU social upgrade from 1.2.0-beta4 to 1.2.0-beta5. Turned out that 1.2.0-beta4 is the production version and 1.2.0-beta5 is currently the nightly builds so there was no upgrade. Update. diaspora* 0.6.0.0 up, backupped and snapshotted at 13:42 UTC. The Consumium free social quartet are all up. Problem was something with unix-sockets not working as expected. Worked around by using the "old" style of communicating: TCP/IP w/ IPTABLES set to disallow any attempts from outside of even thinking of knocking on the port. Juboxi (talk) 16:05, 7 September 2016 (EEST)
    • Had an outage of a few hours on this development wiki last night. Was probably caused by DNS <-> WebUI glue code failure, still waiting on confirmation from the Esbo hosting guys. No data loss occurred. Made full backups of database and static files. Juboxi (talk) 13:36, 7 September 2016 (EEST)

What is new in MediaWiki version 1.28[edit | edit source]

I have noticed the following new things in MediaWiki version 1.28 (alpha)

    • It sends email to admin when it spots problematic edits. Will report more on what criteria triggers it when I find that information

Search for awesome free software[edit | edit source]

Github user Kickball has with a little help from friends compiled this awesome topically sorted list of awesome selfhostable copyleft software alternatives to commercial services.

    June[edit | edit source]

    Wednesday 2016-06-22[edit | edit source]

Action Plan 2016[edit | edit source]

The way forward is open. Barcode scanners which are available for all mobile platforms can utilize the camera to either read the barcode or the textual representation under it.

A good w:copyleft w:triplestore should be chosen from w:List of subject-predicate-object databases. Native triplestore or on top of RDBMS is probably not important and can be changed afterwards.

To implement the functionalities without needing to be shit-scared of flaws in access controll mechanisms I am thinking (correct me here if I'm wrong) of having 2 separate databases.. 1 where all data is visible to all, maybe even write access for all because of rollback ability and another one that is secret that only the devels.. uhh.. me? can see. Then once it is figured out what should be kept secret from all i.e. access controlls impleplemented so that SysAdmins and such don't get to see stuff they could abuse.

It will likely make sense to have a mirroring database that mirrors both Wikidata and DBpedia (and instruct the algorithm to go compare their values whenever there is free time). Juboxi (talk) 16:26, 22 June 2016 (EEST)

    • Made and verified backups Juboxi (talk) 16:22, 22 June 2016 (EEST)

Allow legit spam in userspace?[edit | edit source]

    • Seems we have a few advertisers in Australia creating user accounts to advertise their legit looking services. Looking at the existing Consumerium:Rules and Consumerium:Guidelines I don't see anything saying this was never allowed. Verdict is: Clean business (no porno, guns, torture equipment) and legit looking domain name they are spamming and text appearing to be written by a human and it stays.

Interesting new commercial social media is w:Tsū (social network). The system has revenue sharing to those producing the popular content and works with the concept of channels like Hubzilla. One must wait for 7 days before can begin creating channels. Tsū protects consumers' content better than Facebook it would appear and there is glue code to post to facebook. Is basically a more ethical drop-in replacement for Facebook. I'm http://www.tsu.co/Jukeboksi there. Juboxi (talk) 20:11, 3 June 2016 (EEST)

    • Mmmm.. in negotiations via email lasting less then one day I managed to negotiate -55% price and +100% RAM for the machine running this development wiki. Sometimes I'm good. So I started by telling them that competitor X has this kind of deal and if their cost structure allows them to match it then by all means. They didn't just match, they exceeded.

    • Today I installed w:GNU social #freesome on https://social.consumium.org for the purposes of providing the consumer with more choices and to demonstrate experience in setting one up for http://faces.fi w:Faces Etnofestival for which I'm doing marketing pro-bono. Their pensioner discount is 100% so it's only reasonable I contribute. It would be a natural step to provide social.faces.fi for the festival goers before during and after for the festival-goers. Calculated on a 18€ / month cost for server the 10 yr cost is only 2160€, practically nothing in the marketing prices ballpark. --Juboxi (talk) 19:33, 3 March 2016 (EET)

    • It is obvious that to produce value to the consumer the effort must play with sets of sets
    • Bringing all the projects, efforts and commercial and non-commercial entities Consumerium list of lists that are scattered in many articles will likely yield a better whole picture is good short run but in the long run going to need database solution. --Juboxi (talk) 14:20, 16 January 2016 (EET)

Ok.. Server migration done. Next up adopting git to manage the MediaWiki/extensions and to upgrade the MediaWiki to latest. Git was broken on the old production server which was main incentive for migrating to a clean new system. --Juboxi (talk) 12:42, 17 July 2015 (EEST)

I just enrolled in the Helsinki Summer University course on Android development. No-one else has been and is being stepping up to the call so I think I need to get into software engineering and I'm taking this course on the front end stuff. Will use MaidSafe for secure storage of the historical vote data.. At start we can donate more space then we need. This way the effort can acquire MaidSafe coins to pay for future storage needs in TBs or beyond. That or pizza for jubo-jubo ( the MaidSafe coins ) --Juboxi (talk) 13:38, 4 April 2015 (EEST)

Crowdfunding drive to be able to hire professional to move the Consumerium effort into praxis instead of the 13th year in development ? --Juboxi (talk) 12:50, 22 March 2015 (EET)

The core functions of the Consumium/Consumerium software aren't really complicated and almost everything has been specsed except maybe one thing. Instead of being crazy protective and have votes be anonymous a better praxis would be to give right to the consumer for each vote or set of votes whether to publicly show that these are his/her votes and this is how s/he voted. Everyone would see everyones ratio of public votes and anonymous votes. Another ratio is naturally the positive/total and negative/total public votes.

-> This way the consumer may choose what to share with the world and what to vote in anonymity.
Giving multi-tiered access controll like "Everyone, friends, just me" would be something people would take for granted --Juboxi (talk) 12:46, 22 March 2015 (EET)

Note to self: "Try not to do lists badly when one should be doing databases well." How about learning SPARQL since that is the language one can query DBpedia and Wikidata

Backupped everything and upgrded MediaWiki to newest version

    July[edit | edit source]

    Tuesday 2014-07-27[edit | edit source]

Made backups a few days ago. The machine I used to verify the backups is no longer with me so it'll take a few days before I can verify the backups.

The study wiki is now down for a while since looking at the logs with 'tail -f' I can see that the DDoS is still ongoing and I haven't yet figured out how to thwart it.

I just installed CodeReader for SailfishOS by Steffen Förster on my Jolla. This is the 1st time I've had a working barcode scanner as I've never owned an iOS or Android device (dislike both AAPL and GOOG based on perceived too dominant market position). CodeReader scans QR code, Aztec, Data Matrix, Code 128, EAN 13, Interleaved 2/5 and UPC-A, out of which I've now tried EAN 13 and QR code. The EAN 13 codes actually scan more easily then QR code. --Juboxi (talk) 18:07, 29 July 2014 (EEST)

Note to self: install a stronger CAPTCHA. The current one is clearly not adequate.

So.. The mobile devices' abilities have come a long way since 2002 when the Consumium / Consumerium effort was 1st announced and the Consumer Agent which I envisioned over 10 yrs ago is clearly implementable today as a mobile app.

I'm very excited about the upcoming MaidSafe Networks. It seems like a natural choice to use as storage back-end to store historical accounts of how the votes were at such and such time. I am planning on donating 1.3TB of storage to the network as soon as it comes online so for a long time we will be providing more storage then we'll be using. The reason to choose MaidSafe Networks as the long-term storage solution is due to the high level of privacy and security provided by the architecture and the fact that the informations on the MaidSafe networks are nearly indestructible if I am understanding it right. --Juboxi (talk) 18:57, 29 July 2014 (EEST)

According to https://wikiapiary.com/wiki/Consumerium this Development Wiki currently has 54599 users, which is sorta bizarre since I haven't seen humans in a long time. According to http://podupti.me/ https://d.consumium.org Diapsora* pod has an uptime of 100%, newest available code, 0 users and is almost 1 yr old. On Diaspora* it's possible to interact with humans. Cancel the fuzz about GNU MediaGoblin as the replacement for youtube, flickr, soundcloud etc. The real replacement is naturally MaidSafe. The people behind this endeavour to build a radically different distributed network with new features. The people behind the Ltd entity that exists for the MaidSafe effort has donated all w:patents and code to the human kind. --Juboxi (talk) 20:01, 28 May 2014 (EEST)

The w:CAPTCHA is still shit... Appologies about that around.. my bad, not taking care of arms race against the machines, a child could code a 2-bit bot that'd solve it. My 2nd year in business school has kept me busy, or so I keep telling people. w:reCAPTCHA is one of the best classical CAPTCHAS so I install that at some date. I try to get it done this summer. --Juboxi (talk) 19:55, 28 May 2014 (EEST)

so how about you reremember how to use the 'date' command and feeding a string to modify the system date time.. oui? can has? and come backs and strike out the above text and add text that the time is no longer badly off. --Juboxi (talk) 15:48, 9 January 2014 (EET)

Obviously needs a way to read all relevant templates in Wikipedia into database, either via DBpedia or Wikidata and in the longer term try to build support for both as sources of datafeed.

Been occupied by failure in Debian6 -> Debian7 upgrade on a non-critical netbook. Everything crucial was backupped. Installed the new clean Debian7 on a 40GB file system I got from clearing an old Ubuntu and leaving the old Debian6 and Win7 disks intact. The only use besides holding written work is to verify that the mysqldump dumps actually work. Gonna work on restoring that tomorrow

Domain http://c.consumium.org set up (it works) Next to the SSL certificate to enable accessing wiki via encrypted, a crucial component of consumer protection. The registrar has some problem with it SSL certificate generation process, I dunno when it will be solved..

Yeah.. their process gives a 500 error and it says they are probably working on it already.. Sorted.

Seems one major problem with this whole consumer empowerment scheming is how to tell what is a human and what is a bot.

Did complete backups of https://d.consumium.org and this development wiki on the new machine et al.

mmm.. the new Finnish server arrived... I pay the hosting guys a lot compared to todays price leader but I've negotiated 2 for the price of one. :D Keeping the production servers in Finland ensures that any legal threats will fall under Finnish jurisdiction.

Got the .crt and the .key file. Not sure where from I get the .pem file... HTTPS protected implementation phase wiki is advancing..

Domains consumium.org and yhteinen.asia have been renewed till 2015

I'm downloading the backups also to the new laptop I've acquired. The ADSL hardline got sold to me as 40Mbit/s and all I see is 15Mbit/s.. The rights of the consumers..

'k .. got the .pem file from registrar.. everything looks set to try to set up encryption for connections to https://c.consumium.org ( not existent atm )

    2013-12-29[edit | edit source]

Working on acquiring a 2nd SSL cert + key to run c.consumium.org/wiki/ with HTTPS protection. To not to protect the users who'd wish so would be inexcusable.

We seem to have a problem with machines joining, writing their non-sense and pretending to be humans. Something has to be thought to counter this.

https://d.consumium.org is the same certificate as consumium.org on the cheap Dutch machine ergo needs a distinct sub-domain to keep production servers in Finland to ensure in Finnish jurisdiction.

According to http://wikiapiary.com/wiki/Consumerium ( tab "General" ) this development wiki has around 20,000 registered users out of which maybe 100-150 are humans. Needs to update the w:CAPTCHA to a moderner version obviously.

To choose correct MediaWiki/Extensions and formulate correct templates is crucial to not doing a bad job at slowly moving to implementation phase ( c.consumium.org )

There was an server outage in noon EET approx 1:50-2:05 in duration. Contacted the hosting people about it as the server wasn't responding to http or ssh and they replied it's in the works and little later services were restored. Both http://pingdom.com and http://uptimerobot.com both sent an email alert but no SMS was received as promised by the pingdom.com freebie account with it's free 20 SMS alerts. As I suggested to them they should send a "Welcome to pingdom.com SMS alert." to the newly registered so that it would be explicit that the SMS alerts are now configured in such a configuration that they work when they are supposed to.

There is still one problem with the voting plans.. what to do with votes of accounts bannhammered onwiki? One instinct would say to cancel them all. Another would say that would lead to abuse of power. One aspect is that it'd actually interesting to calculate the results of only banned users but maybe still exclude them from the main counting. But excluding votes by banned onwiki users would lead easily to sysop vandalism.

Information framework and sources[edit | edit source]

MediaWiki + Wikipedia + Wikidata ( Wikibase-Extension ) + DBpedia + Commons + wikidata.consumium.org + files.consumium.org + Wikitravel + Wikivoyage ( WMF competitor to Wikitravel ) + Transnationale + Responsible Shopper + Ethical Consumer == more then enough for moving onto the D&D phase ( deployment & development ) after 10.5 yrs in the R&D phase given that implementing the voting is not necessary to get started on building wiki.

Open but discardable voter ids[edit | edit source]

The voting plans are now brainsane but implementation is complicated. We'd really need crypto & provability experts to design the voting/vote counting framework. To facilitate the social media game we must give users the ability to reveal sub-sets of their votes to different audiences. Voters must apparently be assigned an ID to enable to track vote flow from counting time to counting time accompanied by an implementation that fully respects Right to vanish by means of taking a new id discarding the old one and setting all vote sets non-visible and no-one except you knows ( who knows ) who you are voter-wise, privacy restored.

There was an outtage of approx. one day in duration that was resolved today. The Apache2 couldn't bind to socket for some reason.

I should really edit voting to reflect that it really does not make sense from a consumer privacy protection angle to have open personiefied voting, but open yet anonymized voting in where everyone sees what everyone voted but does not know who voted what ( unless explicitly made public ). This way any paid-trolling and skewing efforts can be countered by formulating anti-skewing vote counting measures and these are easy to distribute should active "trusted" parties/factions form.

Could consider optional anonymization of voting for consumer information safety but that will hasten the skewing effort by paid trolls like voting positive on Nestlé, Shell and so and if the votes are anonymized we can't go and tell them that we have a problem with someone voting something they vote since we cannot no longer know who is it that is voting stuff that has to be cleared out with tuning the counting distributed the tuned counting system to anti-skew.

http://dumps.consumium.org now online, the 2nd server. I chose the Finnish hosting guys because:

    1. ) of the inevitable demand for backup space and with as low as 100 or 200GB the cost-savings were substantial
    2. ) I am foreseeing a future rise in server performance demand as we begin with the implementation phase.

In their solution we can have all VPS bought from them in the same subnet and then via the API ( or the web interface to the API ) you can configure the L3 firewall that controls traffic in or out of any machine in the subnet so that should yield a high performance system with only a few handfuls of virtual servers. Physically their computers are connected to each other over 10Gb/s Ethernet and their storage solution is fast SAS-disks connected to an extremely low latency 40Gbit/s w:infiniband network and w:SSD read caching in the middle of the disks and the superfast network.

Yeah.. Loaded 45€+VAT to the upcloud.com account estimate says that the total money in the account is enough for 104 days of 2nd server as of 2012-07-02

Translatewiki is a great resource for Consumium effort.

    2012-07-01[edit | edit source]

Looking at two potential VPS-from-cloud providers, http://www.gandi.net and http://fi.upcloud.com . I use the former for domain registry and really like it. Seems like an extremely solid and sympathic company otoh the latter gets cheaper and cheaper in comparison when the requirement for diskspace goes up. The fi.upcloud.com uses fast SAS disks attached to 40Gbit/s infiniband networking ( 4 x the speed of 10Gbit ethernet and lower latency ) .

The server no. 2 I'm shopping for now will be called backup.consumium.org and besides backing other servers up only serves as status.consumium.org and dumps.consumium.org. Without root password, strictly only very trusted people have sudo access, using ssh keys instead of passwords to access the backuppable servers / services.

Then server no. 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 etc can be backupped automized to the backup server.

I raise my glass of fairtrade red wine "Thanks all who've contributed during these 315,619,200 seconds that the development work has been more or less ongoing. Thanks to all my friends who've held me together during the bad and the good times. Here's to the next 315,619,200 seconds of Consumerium effort. Allright. The ConfirmEdit-extension is now fully functional. Back-ups are recent and verified to work, so we are all ready to open up the wiki.

    April 15th[edit | edit source]

Allright. Progress in making The ConfirmEdit extension work. The ConfirmEdit is now called for page save and such though I've been unable to get the TeX -> PNG rendering to work so it gives an error and prints the math problem in text instead of as a picture.

So SimpleCaptcha is known to be easily penetrable by existing bots and the current state of MathCaptcha very closely resembles that and is easily solveable by non-bodies ( i.e. bots ).

The Spam Blacklist extension is installed, using blacklist from meta.wikimedia.org and appears to be working correctly.

There must be umpteen gazillion trillion new MediaWiki features and extensions added since 1.10, so these have to be investigated and Consumerium plans adjusted to take the new features into consideration re Implementation Wiki (and also this Development Wiki )

    April 11th[edit | edit source]

    Next steps will be...

    1. ) Installing both CAPTCHA and a regexable blacklisting starting off with "Xanax", "Viagra" and "Cialis".
    2. ) OPENING UP THE DEVELOPMENT WIKI FOR EVERYONE ( except the bots ) to edit !!

05.05.2010 There are three possible models for the Consumerium wiki(s):

    1. Divided by langauge (this doesn't work as was demonstrated by http://en.consumeria.info/wiki/)
    2. Divided by country (this requires a helload of redundant editing)
    3. Monolithic á la http://wikitravel.org

04.05.2010 You perhaps know how impossible being a central/frequenter sysopping a wiki is when you often get locked up by the mental health people. This lapse from the 2006 is partly blameable on the mental health machinery in .fi and partly on technical problems which cause a few edits lost, but I minimized the damage

Now we've tried http://en.consumeria.info and that didn't work out at all, too much redundancy you know. Now there is the option of having consumerium delivered divided by country or as a monolith consumerium á la http://wikitravel.org

Sorry for todays outage of some 1,5 hours in duration. I had to do some maintenance work. Actually I did really dirty hack of sed:ing the mysqldump and reloading it. I change two things:

    1. The project namespace used to be "Consumerium" now it is "Consudev". I haven't done any redirections for the old article names because according to a brief Google search no outside sites linked to any of the articles in the old "Consumerium"-namespace. This change of the project namespace was to "make way" or clarify the the difference of this wiki from the implementation wiki, which will use Consumerium as it's project-namespace.
    2. My nick back to the old form, sans the "h". I'm trying to recooperate from my multiple-nickonality-disorder
Please make this Develop:, Research: and Publish: for the three different projects. Among other things this makes it very easy for other projects to copy structure. "Consudev" means simply nothing.

Please report to me if this has broken something. sincerely, Juxo The Chief Gardener of Consumerium Gardeners and your loyal Lowest Troll

Today I've been trying to get Templates and Categories to cooperate in such a way that pages could be tagged with a template that automatically lists it in a category so that we could coordinate cleaning this wiki up, but I'm having trouble getting it to work. I'll work on the issue though I'm quite busy trying to get through a book on marketing that I have an exam on on monday.

The friendly folks at #mediawiki @ freenode informed me that this is a known bug and to get the Category to display those pages that have been categorized into it a category link embedded into the template need to be edited without any changes made and saved and then the category link starts to work.

But today I got evidence that sometimes studying pays off. I run across a mention of Consumer Reports while reading for the exam. An independent organisation that's been protecting and advicing consumers since 1936 is surely a notable player and thus it's web-publicationclearly belongs in Essential projects unlike some obscure crap that's populated the Essential projects-article

Allright. Today is time for a Delethon.

Yes, Yes, I know it's uninspirational to delete stuff without adding some useful material but today I've exhausted myself by cleaning two flats and moving a hell-lot of stuff from one flat to another so I'm tired.

I plan to weave some sense into this wiki soon by organising the information and putting the overtly trollist content into a realistical perspective (Now one could ask how realistical is it to say that I'm going to single-handedly detrollify the wiki :p ) --Juxo 21:39, 18 Aug 2005 (GMT)

We, trolls, will resist all the way. What is realistic is that trolls have won all their battles on large public wikis, and that today, the New Troll point of view is accepted as being required to undo systemic bias. Even at Wikipedia there are projects to undo systemic bias, and, there are arbitration committees, and those who were anti-troll, e.g. Eric Moeller, Daniel Mayer, have been driven off by trolls mostly.
Why would you wish to attack material which is correct, to replace it with crap (like "virtual community") which is wrong?

    17.08.2005

Today I've been cleaning my flat and I took some e-waste, mostly old broken computer equipment to the communal (YTV) trash and recyclable collection centre (Sortti-asema) that now accept e-waste free of charge due to the new EU legistlation that imposes a recycling-fee on manufacturers and importers of electric and electronic equipment charged in the sale of new equipment which pays for the recycling costs. This is a great solution since before this new law there was a fee that one had to pay to get e-waste correctly scrapped and recycled, which naturally lead to people throwing e-waste into ordinary trash bins that then wound up in the landfills with all the hazardous materials (like lead in CRT tubes) polluting the environment.

I certainly hope that the processing of the e-waste they collect is in order because, like some of youl, I have seen TV-footage from a chinese town that has turned into the e-waste-land of western electronics with oxes pulling carts towering with used phones, faxes and computers of all sorts and the poor workers heating up circuit boards without any or next-to-none breathing etc. protection to collect w:copper and whatever other valuable materials can be recovered this way from the e-waste.

It's been really quiet in here, but maybe we will pick up some speed as we head to autumn.

Today I updated the MW installation to 1.4.7. This was not a security related upgrade. It contained some bug fixes.

Also I'm changing the "Project"-namespace from "Consudev:" to "Consudev:" to make way for "the implementation wiki" which in turn will use "Consudev:" as it's project (or meta) namespace

This is the R&D wiki for this project and has been so for almost 2,5 years. During this time our plans have been made out for making custom software that have now been ditched in favor of using wiki to implement some of our planned features. Plans regarding many things have evolved and obsoleted material is not removed systematically which has lead to this situation where the wiki is internally incoherent and confusing even for oldtimers. I appologise for this laziness in my wiki-tending.

Sometimes when we get the inspiration to really focus on some real issues we usually try to tackle the ancient problems of governance. In this kind of project, which is clearly political... it's very aim is to enable political consumerism much care needs to be put into establishing a power structure that is as lateral as possible because vertical power structures have the downsides of those endowed with more power then the normal user will either or both

    1. become corrupt
    2. be falsely accused of corruption

Parties that feel their position threatened by consumerium-type-of-activity will surely aim to derail consumerium by actively inserting disinformation and those with good intentions might insert misinformation unknowingly which has to be dealt with which means that we must have sysops and as always trolls will attack the sysops and attack even more forcefully the process by which sysops are appointed which is just as it's always been and how it's gotta be.

    09.07.2005

Sorry that I've been so inactive this spring and begining of summer. I will try to focus more on what's really esssential: Getting to implementation phase. The plan in my head right now is that there will be only one wiki that will cover all the langauges, though in the starting phase only English will be allowed for practical reasons. Since Consumerium is not an encyclopedia multiple points of view can and should be simultanously expressed in many articles that "compete" with each other on popularity (votes).

Certain Consumerium:reserved words will be allowed to be used only where they identify the type of article(s) the subarticle(s) are.

Edit wars will not be as prominent as they are in NPOV wiki-projects by letting MPOV play out in parallel articles and subarticles that can be forced to be linked from the "main"-article by using m:User:Juxo/Extensions/ListSubPages-extension. In certain places sub-pages can be used to express support or opposition of the contents or naming of some article. For example, if someone writes an article named SomeProduct/reviews/Product is of low quality, which is a review (a reserved word) you can show support (a reserved word) by putting your signature on page SomeProduct/reviews/Product is of low quality/seconds (as in "second a motion") or opposition by starting an article SomeProduct/reviews/Product is good for use (a lateral article) or by creating SomeProduct/reviews/Product is of low quality/Above review does not portray reality (a sub-article)

So to sum it up... To portray a different view point from some other can be done by lateral articles or sub-articleing the article in question. --Juxo 17:29, 9 Jul 2005 (GMT)

    19.06.2005

Today is my day off. There are a few issues regarding a new way to arrange information efficiently and intuitively. Once I get the final details (more like pitfall fixes) in place I will present the plan for public scrutiny.

    15.06.2005

Today I upgraded the Test wiki straight from CVS, so I could write an extension that gets parameters passed in similar way as in XML and HTML ie. <extesion parameter="value"><extension> which has been possible only 13 days as of today.

Soon I will upgrade the ListSubPages extension to allow ordering of subpages by article creation time, article modification time and eventually by regular expressions (Currently it lists the articles by alphabetical order and MySQL thinks that CAPITAL 'B'. is before lowercase 'a'. I will not jump at it, but relax for a while and let my subconcious work on it.

    11.06.2005

Today I wrote my first MediaWiki extension. It looks up all subarticles for any article. You can try it out at http://test.consumerium.org/alpha/Alphaconsu:Some_Product

Next extension to code is maybe collating articles into one view from many different articles or something.

Also last night I came to think about a new strategy that feels really really suitable and intuitive for workable Wiki governance, but now I'm very tired and have to get sleep so later folks.

    09.06.2005

Attention.xml seems interesting. They have really well thought presentation (the "nerdy stuff") about the pitfalls and successes of several Markup Languages (XML and HTML).

"All" know that voting is unwiki in some fundamental way... Maybe Attention.xml will develop into a framework that we might utilise to do more complex voting then just Oppose, Neutral, Support

I've been busy today assembling a working Linux workstation for my friend from some old scrap machines.

    • Upgraded from 1.4.4 to 1.4.5.
    • Seems that using the m:SpamBlacklist extension has turned spam-anti-spam into a classical mouse and cat game. If wikispamming continues to be as volumnous as it's been this last week or so I'll be forced to move to a hidden blacklist. Grouping services geographically[edit | edit source]

I've been thinking about the Language vs. Area problemacy. I've been plotting a plan in my head that certain companies and products they offer should be arranged by location ie.

    [[FI/Tampere/SomeTex-MexRestaurant]]
    [[US/California/Santa Cruz/SomeBikeRepairShop]]
    [[CA/Ontario/Toronto/China Town/SpicccyChineseRestaurant]]

Thinking how this is not a workable arrangement for transnational corporations to pinpoint them to their HQ...

...but then something almost magical happened... I remembered something that I've been taught in school: There are Goods (tanglible) and Services (intanglible), both of these are products (This is how it is in the course books). The distinction between a service and a good is sometimes difficult to make. This is covered well in the w:Service article.

    An example (far fetched):

-Juxo goes to the store to buy bread. Is the store selling me a bread or is it selling me a services (sourcing, logistics, storage and other activities that enable me to consume the service leaving the store knowoing that I won't go hungry for a while now)?

Some people argue strongly that all transactions should be viewed as services. See w:Service economy and/or Service economy on this view point.

I'm currently thinking that companies selling services should be arranged into a tree-like structure so that the companies provoding services would be close to each other in the article hierarchy. And, yes, I know how bad this solution is for performance (I can actually read and write SQL (!)... after all MediaWiki is developed for Wikipedia where the common wiki-way is to avoid sub-articles so it's not at all optimised to traverse up and down subarticle-trees.

Article validation coming to 1.5[edit | edit source]

Article validation is a hot topic on meta today as m:User:Magnus Manske has once again implemented this feature as described in m:Article validation feature this time it seems to be integrated into MediaWiki in 1.5 tree and you can try it out here.

This new feature is likely the tool we are going to use to decide what gets published as facts and what doesn't.

Those of you who have been with us for a while may remember when we decided that articles about the real world get published when the "default signer" signs a version of an article thus the dreaded sysop doesn't get to make (or have the misery of having to decide) the decision of what goes and what doesn't.

The problem of whose responsibility it is to make these kinds of decisions doesn't evaporate away because someone has to decide who are the decision makers in each case.

Past, Present and a little Future[edit | edit source]

This wiki has been online for over 2 years and a lot of new new features have since been added to MediaWiki.. heck it used to be called "Wikipedia phase III" when I first installed this versatile and user-friendly wiki. Categorizing many pages here like Links and ISMs for example doesn't seem to be of much use since these have already been collected into article-lists. On the other hand we have over 1000 articles and we are in need of unification ie. nail down what do we want consumerium to do and focus on how to get it done in real life.

We have to decide what do we want consumerium to do and how to get there without stalling at the starting gates due to lack of coverage/information or misguided by misinformation and w:disinformation, lead astray by sock puppets, paid trolls and the creatures of the deep.

Soon I will define and publish the minimum feature set (of the often far flung features) which

    1. Catch the ethos of consumerium
    2. Allow editing work done locally and globally
    3. Involve and internetwork Consumers, Workers and Capitalists in all 3*2*1 = 6 ways (or as close as one can get to that)

    26.05.2005

I've got my thinking cap on and I think I'll get a plan for moving to implementation phase soon. Please be patient. I remember when I started this project I was thinking of 10-15 years to implementation... of this only little over 3 years have lapsed. Also emergence of interesting technologies such as NFC and cell phone manufacturers coming out with phones with WLAN and Bluetooth has leaped forward.

    22.05.2005

I've been thinking about the non-wikiness and extra hassle that comes if we try to get this thing working using three wikis:

Inevitably that would lead to inconsistencies, wasted working hours and frustration.

I think that it would make sense to drop the third wiki and replace that with non-editable html. I'm not using the word static, because an article or more likely a set of articles from Research Wiki will be merged for publication. This stage would allow the Preferences (that have been at the heart of the whole concept of Consumerium right from the start) to be implemented.

I asked around at #mediawiki on http://freenode.net about wiki -> html conversion since there are hundreds of sites serving Wikipedia content as static html I thought that either all those sites invented the wheel for themselves or there is a freely available tool, and there is one developed within mediawiki development here is the .inc file and here is the .php file (from the 1.5 alpha tree)

The Language vs. Area question on what basis is used to arrange - ie. store and retirieve information - most efficiently organise the information still remains a major blockade stopping us from going on into implemenatation phase.

There are (imho) two approaches to making Consumerium services and features to work:

    1. Pro-Determinism: machine-friendly: heavy use of categories, heavy use of namespaces, Using strictly the same terminology as a business operative would eg. Company, Brand and Product namespaces
    2. Emergent: Laid back, more wikilike. Let's just see if we can make minimum set of rules of what goes where and how will strange attractors or other "order from chaos" emerge.

    21.05.2005

Today I got the Consumerium spam blacklist configured and working. I'm not protecting it for now. Please if you notice new clear cut wiki spam cases, add them to the list and blank the page untill a sysop shows up to delete the pages.

    17.05.2005

This wiki seriously needs to be categorized, but upcoming Research Wiki avoids using category where ever it can be avoided to keep it simple.

    14.05.2005

The wiki was offline for a few hours but the good news is that I managed to upgrade MediaWiki to 1.4.4 (latest stable) after hacking the installation scripts quite a bit.

Other good news is that I managed to get the short URLs to work. If you spot something that's broken due to this upgrade please email me.

Fixed interwiki linking which was lacking wiktionary:kitchen and WikiBooks:Cookbook

    09.05.2005

While doing the chores I removed a bunch of hits from a run-amok rogue wget-script so that for a change Statistics are sane and propably even correct.

Sourceforge is experiencing trouble with their mirrors so I could not load the newest stable MediaWiki (1.4.4)

    25.1.2005

My computer is toasted once again and is in "service" currently. Unfortunatelly they get the needed part to their european central distribution centre on Jan 30... Way to go Apple.

142.177.X.X seems to be back and is as confusing as ever, but otoh he made some good points in Undelete page (about liability) and Language versus liability though it seems that most of the stuff discussed in Undelete page would fit in Wikis article better. I have some ideas about how to handle the liability question so that we don't need to do censorship nor frequent the court room, but i'll get to that later on after i've figured some law issues out.

One wiki model is something to be considered carefully, but on this question of how many wikis and what goes where and who makes the calls I emphasize the robustness of the model where all votes are public, there are two classes (Direct Vote+Indirect Vote) and every user and every consortium gets to choose their own secret vote exclusion/inclusion rules that are not known to CGO or whatever the nutters who dare to take on like trying work this thing in practice are known as. Representational democracy has almost a diametrically opposed model to this, but a democracy is confined to it's model by it's definition.

Today I managed to get a nick of mine banned (per request by me) by Anthere just to get the feel and functionality there is left after a IP block.

There seems to be a hot discussion of a recent china block on Wikipedia on Wikipedia-l lately,

No doubt the government of China considers Wikipedia to be trolling it - saying things that (to the government of China) could not possibly be acceptable or valid. The way China responds to that is no different than the way Wikimedia responds to true critique of itself, so, they deserve each other. Wikipedia violates GFDL - sadly that obvious and provable fact is censored here by Wikimedia lovers - so there is no moral reason for China not to block it. It's just Jimbo Wales's friends and their personal systemic bias - nothing the government of China has any obligation to respect. Trolls should write to the Chinese government and explain exactly how Wikimedia corruption has damaged the GFDL Corpus. Maybe China will block it for good and criticize the sysop power structure in a major press release. That would be actually quite amusing!

not that this is a Consumerium issue, but previous time that happened it caused a FUCOC report on how it was handled.

I'm out celebrating that my big sister gave birth to a healthy baby girl yesterday at 14:30 UTC+2, so now i'm uncle two times :)

Succesfully sailed the boat from Hanko, Finland to Haapsalu Estonia with my dad, which is where I'm at now. Not having my laptop all the time has given me some time to think without being able to act (edit) immediatelly, which has it's upsides for some open questions have become clear in my mind.

    14.9.2004

Sorry. I said you could contact me via "email this user" but only now remembered to correct my email in prefs. sorry about that.

Ok. That was tedious. It took me over 2 hrs to counter what 142.177.X.X did/claimed in something over 40 minutes

Trolls finally answered to all contested claims that are bogusly labelled false or unsubstantiated - both have clear evidence in their favour, and though there have been attempts to answer or clear up some of these, these are far from timely or satisfactory. There remain many more alleged Wikimedia corruption issues than attempted resolutions. The words of Mr. Wales in Talk:alleged Wikimedia corruption prove his libel chill attempt and his intent to censor anyone who publicly disagrees with him by name beyond a doubt. So far all that you have done on this is to prove the trolls correct or at least very very right to be concerned. So we thank Lowest Troll for that but ask that this page be renamed since it is named from Sysop Vandal point of view and should be from New Troll point of view like the rest of the Develop Wiki. There is an entire Meta-Wikipedia and half of Wikipedia devoted to lies about trolls, every w:Votes for deletion argument that mentions trolls includes lies about them, so there is no need for more room for lies here.

    13.9.2004.

Survived sailing. A little bit fluish and very very tired. I just took the 6:30 am train from Helsinki to Tampere to make it to the French class and I haven't slept shit practically.

Also other very very bad news. My iBook is breaking/broken/unuasable and I have to get it to maintenance asap. There are though lots of vacant computers at our school but I'm so used to typing lecture notes into a localhost-wiki that I really can't do without.

I can't for some strange reason connect via ssh to our server so I cannot for now change my qmail routing to some webmail I can read. If you must contact me my click the "send email to user" link on user page. I'll try to ssh or call someone to change my routing so I can read my usual juxho aatt consumerium dto org email soon.

11.9.2004. Now I'm finally gone sailing

    10.9.2004

First things first. Juxo is gone sailing. Please be mellow if you must troll while I'm at sea.

    8.9.2004

It is clear that claiming corruption is not a function of this wiki unless it is such (dis)information that it is useful to have around to avoid mistakes others may have made while building similar projects. Now I have to go, but I will carry on later to move things to appropriate places and remove any false information from articles which state it as (true) information

You are a liar, and you are part of this Wikimedia corruption that leads to deliberate censoring of information on things like a w:Genuine Progress Indicator. You have effectively destroyed this project by reacting to these Wikimedia lies, and you can expect no further help from any real trolls. When Consumerium Governance Organization is formed it will be formally accused of the same corruption that it covers up on behalf of its friends at Wikimedia, and you can expect no further contact or help now.
What we do from this point, we do to prevent Wikimedia covering up on itself, and to prevent you from claiming that you actually represent the consensus view of all factions and participants in Consumerium:Itself. Unless someone does this, the whole project collapses into yet another corporate shill.
Review Consumerium Governance Organization elections and role of the Chief Editor and ask whether or not you should be knuckling under to Bomis and Wikimedia or whether you must have the guts to tell them to get lost, in order to proceed in a position of responsibility in this project.
Are you actually tough enough to DO this job, Juxo? do you really think Monsanto or McDonald's or Exxon is going to be EASIER to deal with than Bomis/Wikimedia? tough it out and prove that you CAN

Also the amount of bullshitting about irrelevant issues is getting to me slowly.

The most relevant issue is the credibility of articles imported via w:. If you want discussion of Wikipedia to tail off, redirect w: to Wikinfo. <-- if you were ever looking for an offer of a truce, there it is.

The ultimate meaning of this wiki is to plan the operation of the production wikis" not useless biased rethoric and claims about non-consumerium issues that really hurt our ability to get the real work done (ie. Consumerium:Intermediate pages, forming an CGO and establishing what is the Consumerium Process and Guidelines and Rules for the wikis to come.

By not actually acting in accord even with such reasonable guidelines as Consumerium:Proposed deletions, you have ended all reasonable coopeartion. There is no "our", you are just imposing a command hierarchy that must fail.

I plead to all parties that we leave the unnecessary/damaging throwing of accustations and focus on getting the very practical issues worked out so that we can move on the next stage ie. Research Wiki pilot --Juxo 18:59, 9 Sep 2004 (EEST)

That is entirely up to you. Trolls are done with you. Implement a means of actually choosing the best editor for the Develop Wiki and for the Research Wiki, via a Consumerium Governance Organization, and we will help you move towards that. But we are no longer submitting to your very poor editorial judgement.

Yesterday I had a meetup with Linkola who is working on his doctorate in http://www.uiah.fi . I'm half way reading through his masters thesis and will write a brief summary of it here. It contains lots of interesting research information about consumer wishes, hopes, fears and practical information about how consumers use the information about products supplied to them currently.

It's very easy to study what they look at. It's very hard to study how it affects them. Focus on price premium perhaps as the indicator that can be made objective? That is, someone buys the green light product even though it costs 10 Eurocents more than the red light - but if it costs 15 they do not buy either, or, they actually buy the red light product. That's the kind of data you need to determine what the actual willingness of people to pay more to satisfy individual buying criteria is.

He renewed his commitment to become one of the founding members of Consumerium Association of Finland. He was most interested in getting a pilot project hastily off the ground and to get to analysing how and what information consumers use for making decicions, so I'm betting that he would be very interested in link transit data which has been a hot potato around here for quite some while now.

Yes, clearly it's of even more use to Consumerium Services or other serious wiki missions than to those bogus pseudo-encyclopedists who don't even understand why it's important, or pretend not to (more likely unless they are stupid).
If it's so obvious why link transit data is valuable, then why haven't any of the users requested it? Just answer my question on Talk:Link transit. If you're so arrogant that you refuse to my question on the grounds that I am "too stupid", why should you expect me to do this work for you? -- Tim Starling 08:49, 8 Sep 2004 (EEST)
What's obvious to people with actual experience managing a corpus is not the same as what's obvious to the gibbering drooling hordes that consider Wikipedia to be more credible than the w:National Enquirer. Why didn't "the users" demand retaining the number of page views, too? How is anyone supposed to answer that? You told them that server load was the problem, that you couldn't do anything "because of server load", there were dozens of such requests turned down for this reason. Perhaps you're all such bollocks as programmers that you can't figure out how to do it effeciently? But you certainly did your job squashing the user requirements pipeline flat: don't blame the trolls if you don't get accurate information from it now.
And, no one ever said they expected anyone, least of all you "to do this work for" anyone. It's important to editors to have some idea of how often their work is read, so they know where to focus editorial effort. It's not surprising that Wikipedia didn't think of this since it values volunteer time at zero, generally, and doesn't care how much volunteer time gets wasted dealing with say sysop vandalism and the like.

He also expressed his view that we should start with a limited group of users, but I countered that with the fact that we have for a long time been planning for a system that is accessible to everyone without any limitations of scope as to users.

It is obviously better to have wide-open editorial policy that is troll-friendly and immune to propaganda or takeover by any one faction - else who would trust the data? This is just typical academic belief on his part, that somehow cliques can be made trustworthy. It's fairly obvious that without the wide-open policy, none of the design work would have gotten done.
So far even the Sysop Vandal point of view expressed strongly by some sysops pretending to be trolls has not had any significant effect. Anyone coming to the front page and clicking around would probably never see any of the nonsense they've been writing, so, troll-friendly policy proves itself once again. Eventually they'll tire and realize they are harassing people who do serious work, interrupting us with their trivial concerns and bogus claims.

I understand that having one single group (ie. the members of some association with interest in these things we are to be dealing with) would make for better research material for his doctorate if he decides to include Consumerium in some way in his post-graduate studies. The discussion we had was intense and I found it very pleasing to actually get to talk about these things face-to-face and not via wiki.

It would be useful to support a doctoral study on moral purchasing but we really need a Research Wiki to actually start to compile intermediate pages on all the things we care about. We are long past due to do that, and other projects are passing us. We can't rely on CorpKnowPedia and Consumerpedia and Wikipedia and Disinfopedia to track these things, though, we might from time to time rely on information from all of them. Wikinfo might be useful to track sympathetic point of view of various movements like no old growth or dolphin free, but, not to track corps, since the Coca-Cola article there must be sympathetic to Coca-Cola! So we have a niche to fill that has not been filled. Perhaps work with Indymedia on this, as they expose corporate misbehaviour a lot?

Here's an interesting piece of code developed by Magnus Manske some while ago. It's not used on Wikipedia but could be very useful for the Consumerium Process. It allows users to flag some article as validated on a number of issues ie. style, legal, completeness, facts, suitability for "final" release (Publish Wiki in our case)

Thanks to User:TimStarling for pointing out this code. I queried him about Magnuses' code for custom meta-tags such as "no index" (or whatever it's called) because if we could easily and reliably control what gets indexed by search engines and what not we could do with a unified Research Wiki and Publish Wiki where articles flagged indexable would be considered "published" and those with "no index" to be still in research stage. Just a thought. Apparently Magnuses' code does not include tags for robots but according to Tim this would not be difficult to implement. The main problem being that once an article is indexed and then some seedy characters add questionable content how does one get Google etc. to stop indexing it. Apparently there is yet no way to remove pages from search engines on request.

I'm currently reading the master's thesis of Jouni Linkola, "Shopping Guide to The Future", which is available (in Finnish) at http://mlab.uiah.fi/5medialaunch/jlinkola_lopputyo.pdf there is also a visualization of some main aspects of it at http://personal.inet.fi/surf/graphic/future.html (in Finnish again). The visualization is quite similar to the original Motivation of Consumerium:Itself. I'm looking forward to meeting up with Jouni to discuss the synergies between his post-graduate studies apparently also focusing on information services for consumers to be more informed and empowered.

Also check out the cool Consumeter shopping bag at http://www.cc.jyu.fi/~antello/designfiction/pictures.htm Watch the associated videos as well if you have broadband.

design fiction is a Good Thing, that's what visions and best cases are about ultimately; and free circulation of fiction is better still.
Can Consumerium:We get Linkola to contribute to visions and best cases? Also he might have insight into worst cases, but more likely we have thought through that more. We need one unified design fiction effort to figure out what our priorities are, and where we're going technically in the long run.

I've found a flat, which has made things somewhat simpler :) , but now I have to wait three weeks for the operator guys to get to installing ADSL for me here :(

    25.8.2004

I managed to find a flat and it looks like next weekend I'm going to spend moving my stuff from me previous flat but after that I hope to get back to developing consumerium with a bit more effort and focus then in the past months.

Why not concentrate on performance requirements and protocol requirements for now. Get them to specify some extreme standards. Then hardware requirements and last software requirements. Doing things in that order may attract the most trolliest trolls.
Though on software it would be good to think about web browser toolbars and cell phone menus that would be required to make Consumerium Services really convenient to use anywhere, anytime, in any roam zone or from any public kiosk web browser.

    22.8.2004

I just counted that it seems that 22 of our 63 registered users are apparently trolls. That must be among the highest troll densities in wikis these days

    21.8.2004

I'm very occupied by trying to find a flat to live in and to kick off my international business studies so you have to excuse me for being a little inactive for a while since i'm squatting at a friendly co-students flat 'till I find a place of my own so that is the top priority for me now.

    14.8.2004

We need to focus on and solve the outstanding issues to get Consumerium Services or Features running. It is clear that we aim to cover more ground then CorpKnowPedia or The Matrix since we intend to cover besides companies also products and product groups. It is much contested to we work better by referencing or engulfing the other similar services.

Using GetWiki we could both reference and engulf at the same time. Can Getwiki take different articles from different wikis? Say by a set of rules that might look for articles on Proper Named entities in one place, say CorpKnowPedia, and generic terms in another place - say Wikinfo ?

It is clear that we need to establish a working relationship with GEPIR and Product registries and Internet UPC Database. For that we need to establish Consumerium Governance Organisation to be able to negotiate deals with these establishment and authoritative sources.

Don't at least one of these orgs give out their data to more or less anyone who asks on a nonprofit basis? If not then yes you are correct.

I guess I should say some wise words now on where we go from here after this weeding round, but I'm too tired to do so. Deleted has link to where the latest non-blanked versions of most deleted articles are, but I really wish we could focus on resolving how we are going to make this to work in the real world.

Where's the archive? And which articles are not in it?

A power structure is needed to keep Consumerium from being sued for libel. I know I know, power leads to corruption and egos that get more and more fragile in the face of losing face the more esteemed the person gets. We cannot escape reality in reality, only in fiction and dreams.

So Consumerium Governance Organization needs to exist.

I guess I should not have mentioned this anywhere since you trolls cannot take this as an issue where I know how it feels to hold the keychain without any key to the chain that cuffs it to my wrist. If you would dare to stick to a real life personality online you would maybe understand some of the pressure and annoyance that comes with a role like I and Jimbo share.

Ah, so you are a GodKing now? But you can give it up any time, you have not got a whole sysop power structure worshipping your very poo, and needing this for your self-esteem. Be one of the trolls, maybe even give up the Lowest Troll job to other trolls, and your problems will fade away. The "pressure and annoyance" comes entirely from this demand to know evertyhgin and judge everything.

    22.7.2004

I'm psyching myself to get back on track and start solving the outstanding practical issues instead of this useless wordplay that we've been engaged in lately. Right now I'm too trigger happy to do anything about this mess called a wiki.

Agreed there is some wordplay but it is carefully selected to make important points quickly to new trolls whose help we need.
The most important thing is to dig through Wantedpages and find all those with non-obvious definitions, that is, anything that one cannot just look up and find accurate meaning of in a google search.
I myself prefer to use http://www.onelook.com which looks up in some 500 dictionaries iirc.--Juxo 00:20, 24 Jul 2004 (EEST)
Well can we add some code like GetWiki's to just fill in blank pages with XML import from OneLook or TrueNames or some other service?
Nope. Incompatible licenses --Juxo 17:23, 29 Jul 2004 (EEST)
Code "like" theirs is easy to write. Just look at theirs, and write new code that works the same, but is not the same. There is no provision in the CC-nc-sa to stop you from trying to reverse engineer code.

It is better to leave open those pages with obvious meanings, so that we can find a way to figure out what they mean in context from their references later. It is also fine to leave Proper Names or companies and people open so that they can eventually be directed to acceptable commentary about them. A few theory terms like respect for diversity and wiki mission are so wide open they should be defined more by osmosis, and we should wait as long as we can to do so - preferably using examples from elsewhere.

But some specialized or sensitive terms are used, e.g. standard label terms like "prison labour", or internal Consumerium process terms like "production process" or "veto" or "product recognition" THAT WE WILL HAVE TO DEFINE EXACTLY FOR PURPOSES OF ALL Consumerium Services, or some technical/legal terms like "mod rewrite" or "Invariant Section". These all should be defined rather exactly so that we can figure out where they apply in the overall Consumerium buying signal and healthy buying infrastructure. We are too much about structure so far, and not enough about process.

Today I'm going to drink beer, befuddled by the complexity of Consumerium plans and the unsanity of everyday life.

    after some beer, on #wikipedia:

here are the basic assumptions i'm relying on: there will be Opinion Wiki where strict syntax will be required to get aggregate information to Publish Wiki, non-neutral-pov is the rule. there will be research wiki where all non-neutral-pov stuff will get axed immediatelly with a kind notice to go mess around in the Opinion Wiki. Publish Wiki will import from Research Wiki pending that someone will bet their own credibility in declaring some information so certain that it needs to be published. also aggregated (via SQL scripts written in a not-yet-decided language) will be used to automatically update the articles in Publish Wiki with the aggregate information from Opinion Wiki with highlights and links to the whole mess of opinions --Juxo 17:53, 30 Jun 2004 (EEST)

Nonsense. "all non-neutral-pov stuff will get axed immediately with a kind notice to go mess around in the Opinion Wiki" BY WHOM?!??!?! THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS "non-neutral POV" unless you mean "everything that the sysop power structure does not like". There is NO ontological distinction here other than "I trust the editor to make this decision". That means the factions will always fight over who gets to be the editor, etc.. It's just not viable. This is wrong. There could be a consensus way to mark something "more of an opinion" or "less like research" using answer recommendation but that requires all the information in the SAME large public wiki. Our dear Lowest Troll is accidentally becoming a sysop in his fantasies and imagines he has the wisdom of a GodKing to decide what is "not neutral". This is just not going to work. There is no "Opinion Wiki" any more, we have the right structure, we just need a formal way to keep what is "questionable research" out of the Publish Wiki and that only because the Consumerium Governance Organization doesn't want to get sued for it. This is a simple achievable goal. Determining what "should be shoved out of sight as mere opinion" is not simple, not achievable, impossible and (most important) factionally defined. It requires a process to do this, and that is more or less the process of moving something to a talk page.

    25.6.2004

Perhaps I hastily presented this reintroduction of Opinion Wiki in a wrong way indicating that it would have something to do with forming the opinion on what to publish and what not. This is absolutelly not the case, but it is meant to provide a place dedicated to voicing our opinions on things. In all large public wikis this is done on the talk page of the article and all CPOV stuff is quietly moved to that talk page. In the scheme of organising things that has clarified in my head we won't be importing talk-pages though it is constructive to place a link to the talk-page of research wiki if there has been heated discussion on what is NPOV in each case.

So why is this not just called talk pages in Research Wiki rather than being called "Opinion Wiki"? If you want to use MediaWiki you have to call it what mediawiki calls it. If you want to have namespaces like critique:Research_wiki_page fine, but same concept.
Because keeping TCE type of stuff in it's own wiki, the Opinion Wiki, enables us to aggregate the information by using much simpler SQL. Queries are run periodically to update the opinion information in Publish Wiki. By implementing the needed collating in SQL we don't need to fork off from MediaWiki, but can just concentrate on improving the Export-import functionality.
So, because you are not a great programmer, you propose making a bad user interface because it is easier to implement? Why not just recruit better programmers that can implement the right user interface? And in SQL there is no reason not to just have a more sophisticated query to distinguish things with certain tags from those without, i.e. "what goes to the Publish Wiki" etc.
by "won't be importing talk pages" you mean the Publish Wiki won't have them? Fine. what is the disagreement here? Also don't forget New Troll point of view, when new information shows up, and new trolls to propagate it, the existing editors must assume they know less about that subject than they need to, since it's not been a previous area of expertise. Therefore they must back down in favour of more troll-friendly ways of determining what is so. This won't always be "quiet".

    24.6.2004

Today I'm trying to get into OOP in PHP. TimStarling is helping out with my newbieness. And still implementing Export-import in a reasonably advanced manner is one concrete goal right now.

And I'm determined that opinioned edits will have a distinct wiki (Opinion Wiki which will then in time implement TCE functionality. In a discrete wiki this can be done with accessing SQL directly instead of modifying MediaWiki code, which leads to simple design and implementation.

    This is just wrong.
    No, it's not.
All edits are "opinionated", especially with the subject matter we're going to deal with.
Nope. If you have an opinion in the form of a campaign, either running the campaign or just voting for it that is different from objective facts that require some kind of audit propably wiki style with relying heavily on simple peer-review.
Trying to move everything YOU think is opinionated elsewhere will just result in the politics as usual.
There won't be that much moving once we lay out the ground rules of what goes where.
What would move is necessarily factionally defined, there's no objectivity there.
Nope, the CGO lays out the rules for all wikis and then sysops enforce those rules. Simple as that.
The right answer is a method for objective scoring or voting or betting, like answer recommendation for instance. Qualitative argument (talk page style) can be structured as TIPAESA but proliferating wikis is just wrong.
    I disagree.
Only one decision is being made: whether to publish the research or not. That requires more focus, not more spread out text all over the place.
It's a difficult question of how to deal with what to publish and what to not without receding to sysop power structure but it is clear to me that the Publish Wiki will draw somehow approved content from Publish Wiki and aggregated opinions from Opinion Wiki ie. Facts from research and opinions on the subjects of research from opionion wiki --Juxo 13:52, 25 Jun 2004 (EEST)

    22.6.2004

I'm back and once again I'm the man with the plan. Actually relaxing in the country side I let all irrelevant thoughts of minor Consumerium details drift away and I saw what it was that was bugging me down. The plan as it is won't work because we won't get any reasonable consensus on what goes from Research Wiki to Publish Wiki because it is a matter of Opinion thus I'm going to re-introduce Opinion Wiki to the plan and maybe that way we can negotiate what gets "published".

That's stupid. Adding new wikis is obviously not the right way to vote or score or bet on things - and some such quantitative approach will ultimately be required to make such publication decisions fairly - see edits, votes and bets. Obviously there is an objective way to turn research into publication, probably by answer recommendation (approval voting on the various answer options) which doesn't even require factions (although it's quite important to allow factionally defined scoring to let you just agree with someone else's view easily).
Perhaps, discipline all Publish Wiki talk to be in TIPAESA form or something, to make it easy to put forward an issue to be resolved, but don't create a separate wiki for it - that is like cancer. The point of wiki is to concentrate argument, not spread it all around to three different namespaces. One issue is one issue, period, and everything must be easily found based on the one name of the one issue. And only one place to put an argument for or against publishing a particular fact.

I'm off to the country side to relax a bit

    18.6.2004

I've been working on CorpKnowPedia and pondering about how Consumerium and CorpKnowPedia interrelate. Like the information they are collecting is just a subset of the information we are intending to gather, but on the other hand it's useful that there exists such a place at this moment where information on corporations can be recorded. I guess we just have to get a really workable import/export scheme working so that both sites can exist. Maybe we will have such a work order that corpknowpedia does big corporations and their interrelations and consumerium does the smaller companies. I don't really know. This is not an easy problem to solve.

    15.6.2004

Today I downloaded MediaWiki 1.3.0beta3 and installed it on my iBook to try out the XML-import facility by commenting out the lines that disable the code from running. I have to say that the way it works by asking you to upload a downloaded xml-dump is really inadequate for our future needs.

Right. The GetWiki way is the correct way: direct to another web address and tranparently mirror the material as is, including all changes, until there is a need to fork just that one page. However there are ideological reasons and Wikimedia corruption reasons why you will not ever get the MediaWiki coders to do that.
No. The right way is to recruit PHP coders to make an import feature that works for us. I know very little PHP, I can hardly read the SpecialImport.php that contains the code for the Import feature. --Juxo 23:05, 18 Jun 2004 (EEST)
If you know such people, then just have them copy GetWiki's XML import feature, which is the right design, into a new MediaWiki version that has a license you can live with. Then fight the geeks who hate GetWiki because it breaks Wikimedia's unrighteous monopoly over text they didn't write.
Can't reintegrate GetWikis leech code into MediaWiki because it's untastefully not licensed under GPL.
So just get someone to clone it. It's not rocket surgery!
    • What we would need is a myriad of wikis with radiobuttons to choose from which wiki to import and do it live, not manually saving and uploading the file.
Yes, absolutely. Being able to import from a different wiki per article is ideal. At least a different wiki per namespace!
    • Also importing histories failed
That's unacceptable given GFDL, but GetWiki doesn't do that right either. Also when Wikipedia exports it give you only the last edit comments not the whole list of editors you'd need to do GFDL attribution to the legally required standard.
    • Actually whole import thingy failed even though it reported success for uploading files without the history parts.
    Disaster!
Yes, you see this issue all the time with redirects from Meta-Wikipedia to Wikipedia, and probably it's also required for Simple English to full English: rather than seeing NO article in Simple, it would make sense to see the Full one. Rather than seeing no article in full where there's one in simple, it would make sense to mirror it.

Sorry for being inactive lately. First I was spending some time in the country side and then i attended entrance exams to study international business in Tampere. The exams went well I think so I might be relocating myself to Tampere soon to study for a BBA.

My finger is finally almost back to normal so I can continue contributing.

I've sent email inquiring about some details of NFC to NFC-Forum.

    19.5.2004

Ok. My finger is finally starting to really heal itself and I can click and type without too much pain so I can now commence operations to develop Consumerium.

One problem that must be re-addressed is the login-question. Originally we planned to have a one-to-one relation of different languages of Research Wiki and Publish Wiki, but with the revised plan that there is only one Research Wiki that works mostly in English language but facilitates research in other languages too in a similar manner as Wikibooks.

    12.5.2004

My finger still needs to heal, maybe i should even go see a doctor, so i'm not participating for a few more days.

Trolls hope it heals, and hope it is not a bite wound from one of us. We wish only psychological distress on idiots, not physical distress on Lowest Troll!

My finger is healing slowly. I've been mostly preoccupied with getting the 147 new wiktionaries to work together better for an ultimate goal of "transwiktionary"

At CorpKnowPedia. I've asked them for MySQL dumps of old and cur tables so that what happened at Recyclopedia doesn't happen again. CorpKnowPedia is much more viable as an information source and may be of great importance to Consumerium operations.

    13.5.2004

I've been doing some work on CorpKnowPedia. It needs your help too and it may turn out to be of great value to Consumerium in the future. Consumerpedia on the other hand seems to have stalled after just starting out.

    10.5.2004

Exciting news with the emergence of Stockepedia, CorpKnowPedia and Consumerpedia. Since we are on the GFDL tip

You mean GFDL Corpus, and yes, you're right.

we don't care worry about them ripping us off like we originally planned to do to what is now known as Wikimedia. I'm sad that our trolls have receded to calling user-accounts, people or semi-people, trollherd or whatever you want or facsists and racists on Consumerium. Consumerium:Itselfs inability to react promptly to such accusations is a disgrace.

The Lowest Troll did in fact respond at Talk:Wikimedia and was refuted - obviously wrong on many counts about the rules of meta, who wrote the material, why it was deleted, and who originated the terms. Erik Moeller is an enemy - there is now apparently a "troll jihad" against him, maybe for his overt political opposition to w:consensus decision making - something he ignorantly announces on his own w:User:Eloquence page (having obviously not read the article which answers all his made-up "concerns", at least, until he performs sysop vandalism on that article too, to "make his opinion correct" as seems to be his habit). But the only obvious racist is EN: Wikipedia: User: RickK. There are three or four obvious fascists, but, they may only be fascists in this one silly online context. All "accusations" have been backed up with exact quoted evidence, unlike the ones they make with thelir echo chamber. And all of this is only relevant "here" insofar as it determines who not to work with (like Wikimedia.
The real shame is that Wikimedia exists at all. It is an extreme disgrace.

Good move; getting more people into those projects, particularly more who can undo stupid sysop decisions by User:DanKeshet, is critical to their survival.

    7.5.2004

Trolls suggest filling out Consumerium:Contributor interests so that important economics, math, ecology topics are all covered at least, by end of April. In May we should have a full analysis and good idea of the path.

I'm taking a couple of days off from this due to exhaustion.

    30.3.2004

I'm changing operators about now and thus for a little while I don't have a connection at home. Hopefully the connection will be restored soon

    27.3.2004

Preoccupied in some behind the scenes actions.

    26.3.2004

I keep getting fun books from my sister. Now I have a Finnish translation of "Die Börse" by Max Weber, which should provide for some interesting reading moments.

It seems that at the time of writing (1894 to 1896) Max Weber was a professor of macroeconomics. Commodity exhanges and stock exchanges were not differentiated at that time

    25.3.2004

I've been busy with application procedures to get admitted to study International Business in Tampere, also the preparations for the Finnish Social Forum are underway.

    22.3.2004

Today I'm mainly busy translating and collating material to Finnish for a presentation at the The Finnish Social Forum.

We are launching a Finnish language Development Wiki as soon as I get the new database required for it. If there is some notable action in the Finnish Development Wiki I will try to periodically update the English wiki on the developments. Not all articles here are planned to be translated into Finnish, just the cream of the crop.

Research Wiki and Publish Wiki are the wikis we are going to work with. mmkay?

So it's Develop, Research, Publish? Fine. So some process turns what "we publish" into the Consumerium buying signal. Fine. That works. The Consumerium Process is going to require some updates to reflect the Develop->Research->Publish->Signal->Feedback->Develop service cycle of Consumerium:Itself.

    21.3.2004

Today I've been concentrating on outlining the Consumerium Process in relation of Noise Wiki to Signal Wiki trying to take both troll friendlyness and stability and reliability and practical issues of technical implementation into account.

See comments at Talk:Research Wiki. Noise implies Development Wiki more than Research Wiki. The name "noise wiki" is bad for many reasons. What prevents anyone from putting in any crap, and why should someone who is not basically worried about the Consumerium buying signal, but just wants to write articles, contribute stuff to be called "noise"? They'd contribute diligent "research" to a Research Wiki, probably, but why volunteer good material to a wiki whose very name invites crap? But anyway get the functions right first, names right later.

I'll try to merge the material from Content Wiki, TCE, Campaigns, Opinion Wiki, Direct Votes,Indirect Votes and WikiVotes to these articles or somewhere where we can have clarity on our implementation plan

Please combine all the voting stuff into edits, votes and bets or at least argue for this design there so we can look at how they interact. And yes spending time reading something is a bet of your time.
There is no final design, so this is not just about "implementation". It's ONE PROPOSED DESIGN. We should have three or four, and they should compete.

    20.3.2004

Exhausted today. I'm planning on holding a discussion of Consumerium.org goals and means in The Finnish Social Forum and that takes some preparation.

Try not to turn it into a Nokia ad! l-D Make them pay for such ads!
No way. The way they've been slowing down bluetooth adoption, even if their motivation is to avoid by all costs associating Nokia with blutooth malware or bluevirus. But still inability to use SyncML and XHTML-browser over bluetooth is unacceptable for a leader of the pack type of company's products.

    19.3.2004

The box I installed Debian on was all segmentation faulty burned up hardware and I'm hoping to get another (hopefully working) old box to install Debian on next week so I can try out GORC and other software. Luckyly our Development Wiki is running on reliable http://pingviini.net server.

Sent an email about Fairtrade On Demand to fairtrade organisations and awaiting what their stand on the idea is.

I'm doing some Wiki maintenance. Mainly deleting stale irrelevant articles and linking orphan articles. I might be looping though all articles to do minor fixes and relinks since i have no new ideas about Language vs. Area or New Summaries or Consumerium Process or Product recognition

Good work mostly. Before Consumerium timeline becomes a revert war, it would be useful to have one past history, and the future goals it relates to, maybe milestones and a definition of pilot. And speed matters, but what is really required is some stopwatch results on how much time real people spend really shopping, and how much they can or could spare with their hands to flip through a book or look at a screen. Regarding AWR, trolls will attempt to formulate general Consumerium:policy that is not offensive but doesn't always require reference to the worst example in the wikisphere by name.
Also, before we get too used to it, what about the name "code.consumerium" rather than "develop.consumerium" ? Though there's more to developing than code.
No way. I already pissed our root of by requesting the original devel. to be changed to develop. we also have http://en.consumerium.org and http://fi.consumerium.org available for use now. These are distinct from http://www.consumerium.org due to the enlightened advice from our root that we should www. as a place to store non-lingual comics or stuff about consumerium. --Juxo
Also presumably there is "research." or "buy." or "signal.", these are in different languages, so "en.consumerium", "fr.consumerium" might be better to make standard wiki URIs. Research in each language can be at /wiki/ while the un-wiki'd URI (like http://en.consumerium.org/Nike) always has the Signal Wiki content - since only a very few people can edit at that stage. That keeps the language subdomaining the same as Wikipedia for standard wiki URI, and differentiates signal and research only in the end of the URI.
Good points. But how do we make the Consumerium Process work so that people don't go straight to Signal Wiki to write stuff that should be in Research wiki. We could have either signined articles and/or unedited for some period of time automatically sucked into signal wiki. We should still consider Language vs. Area questions before setting that we use language as primary divider and area sensitive information goes however it does. --Juxo

    18.3.2004

The Development Wiki has now moved to http://develop.consumerium.org/wiki/ with rewrite in the old http://www.consumerium.org so that all requests to the wiki/-subdirectory get rewritten to use the new domain. This leaves the www-subdomain available for something else.

Contacted Jrg Schulenburg, the author of GORC, a GPL Optical Character Recognition softaware by email. It looks like GORC could be used as product recognition server software.

    17.3.2004

Ok. It seems that my ugly hacks got rc4 finally up and running. I've been fighting to get this work all day. If something seems broken, please email me. Sorry for being out of service. I should be more careful in the future when upgrading or changing the configuration --Juxo 21:11, 17 Mar 2004 (EET)

As a result of a major mistake in updating from rc3 to rc4 I have temporarily downgraded to pre October 2003 installation, which may or may not work. Please bear with me. I'm working on it but have some curious problems on getting the newest or even second newest or third newest install working. I've locked the database, as a security measure that we don't mess the database structure and that no edits are lost, so editing is no longer possible for the time being.

    14.3.2004

I will think for a while. I may be onto something or maybe not, but I will think instead of arguing over Interwiki link standard or other minor details.

    13.3.2004

I've sent an email to robf who is the manager of http://sourceforge.net/projects/upcdatabase/ , which has it's home-site at http://www.upcdatabase.com/ to inquire about the copyright status of the databases they offer. If the copyright enables us to use the upcdatabase, then it surely will be one of the essential projects

UPDATE: The database is licensed under GPL, which is a bit strange considering that there is no program code but just database entries
Can we test its completeness? A good test would be if it includes the obscure scary food products!

    8.3.2004

Going to try updating the MediaWiki-installation to provide XML-export

Successfully updated to MediaWiki 1.2.0rc3 with XML-export now working

Special thanks to Brion for helping out.

    6.3.2004

Dear Lowest Troll: If you look at the Most Wanted Pages, you find two kinds of pages there. Almost all are obviously defined things that have some obvious relevance to consumerium, that we just haven't bothered saying exactly how they relate in detail to the main design, like accounting standard, labour standard, environmental standard, hardware standard, or subterms like prison labour. We don't need to bother filling these in now. The other kind though is terms like trollish which probably should never be defined but which we should link to often. ;-) If you find ANYTHING on that list that should be defined now for clarity, say so, because we ordinary/Lowly trolls think that there is really nothing that is more than a fill-in there. By the time we have to fill those in, we are dealing with details.
When writing a new article, at this point, one should not be introducing new terms. We have covered the basic concepts well enough and introduced as many unique or strange terms as we have to. Eventually we may even get rid of those or standardize them with other large public wikis to enhance usability, but those unique to our troll-friendly culture should and must remain.  ;-)

    5.3.2004

Now there is serious unclarity of which Wikis we are planning to implement. I hope that 142.177.X.X who introduced this competing Research Wiki+Signal Wiki scheme will clarify what is gained in this venture into further internal incoherence in this wiki.

See Talk:Wikis and values. Calling things "Content" or "Opinion" is to make a choice to assign certain values to certain processes applied in each. This is just not right. Processes don't have values. Nor do the institutions built on them. People have values, and people use our wikis for research, and signalling to others, and development. Calling what they do or say "R&D" or "content" or "opinion" is an overlay of YOUR values on THEM. A good system does as little of this as possible. We KNOW we are doing some Development, we KNOW we are doing some Research, we KNOW we are sending a Signal. NO one would dispute those terms. So they do not ask for trouble.

Anyways I've noticed lately that internal incoherence seems to be an universal phenomenon in wikis due to that it's so easy to misplace information by making overlapping and competing articles instead of seeking consensus on one article. Naturally trolls will insist that the ability to express dissensus is a great feature of wiki in general

Absolutely. Without this you never get to a two-party system and factions that agree to debate civilly instead of always forking and fighting, which is exactly what is happening at Wikipedia. Trolls insist on dissensus and will even sometimes make some visible where it is hidden, to drive this evolution. See m:troll for a detailed hierarchy of roles based on this.

As to Consumerium:Retrospection that requires much more concentration on my behalf since I'm the one with the earliest plans in my head to retrospect on.

Probably Greenpeace and Adbusters also had early plans, but they did not work out. Why not? What is preventing this service from coming into being? What is the basic error we are all making? Perhaps it is assuming that consumers will drive this, as opposed to institutional buying criteria. Perhaps it is failure to see the healthy signal infrastructure as one thing that requires great global cooperation and a mind-set shift even into hardware. Perhaps it is bad wiki code, refusal to see price premium or factional logic, or tying ourselves to a permission-based model, or not being troll-friendly enough. Who knows? We must explore all of these... and be our own worst critics (thus threats and worst cases analysis).

One thing I've noticed that I should make a note of into Consumerium:Retrospection once the competing wiki-schemes issue becomes more clear is the shift from formally correct markup into associatively correct markup this is naturally due to the shift from using XML to Wiki code

Let me elaborate. Rather then Company:X, Brand:X and Product:X just have X which states
"this is a product under a brand by the company of same name.
The company in question is a Multinational Corporation that has an
wholly owned subsidiary somecompanyname LTD in this country.
The Multinational Corporation is based in country, subregion village
and it is enlisted in somestockexchage as somestocksymbol etc..."

? They aren't opposites. GetWiki uses XML properly, as an exchange. ConsuML will be easy to suck into GetWiki and turn into the Research Wiki and Signal Wiki default pages. But then trolls must get to work before these can be accepted as the Consumerium buying signal.
What is "formally correct" and "associatively correct"? You refer to links? That is more a wikitext standard than a wiki code problem.

I have a feeling this will go deeper into our instructional capital needed to run the wikis or deliever The Features planned or Consumerium Services whatever the underlying technology used to markup and store information in the sense that maybe we shouldn't be wasting time and effort into modelling business structures as was mentioned in the original concept plans

It may be futile, as they shift so fast and it's so hard to say what goes into a company. Much easier to say what goes into a product probably until you get to the commodity level where the commodity markets fuzz it up - deliberately! Those markets are all for stolen goods, really.

and shift more into modelling consumer experience that is to say that the distinction between a product, a brand and a company is often superficial in the sense of consumer perception and though there are ambitious plans written about how Consumerium Services will affect institutional buying criteria etc. the main goal is still to affect consumer perception

Any marketer will tell you his brand is where the value is. That is, if a brand is trusted, it generates free money. If not, it generates just liability and must eventually be discarded. Like any repute. So work done on companies and products and commodities is probably there ultimately just to build up or tear down a brand. Our users will be friends of some brands, enemies of others, so "Praise/Criticism" is appropriate for Consumerium:intermediate brand page <-- brand can be to product or service or experience or whatever, it's more generic.

    2.3.2004

I like the distinction between product and commodity. This makes for a more clearly defined scope on all things material, though currently commodity is a redirect page and I think that things that are sold in commodity markets globally should be their own category ie. coffee, sugar, cocoa etc.

The distinction between a product and a commodity is basically only that of pricing on w:commodity markets. Even if something is not purchased through these markets, the price quoted on them affects all pricing on that commodity anywhere in the world - with transport costs being the only real price differential. There's a gradation here, and the idea of an industrial ecology where the waste disposal method of one process is the resource extraction method of another (!) is directly opposed to the idea of any kind of commodity market. We should think in terms of the service economy and imagine a world of high transport costs where commodity is more and more a fiction.

Also reversing the linkage relation of campaigns that came to me inspired by Connelly Barnes's idea of an incredibly simple Consumerium standard wiki format seems like a good way to go.

Yup. Though we do have a fairly complex service cycle to model to get to any kind of idea of the comprehensive outcome of any process whatsoever.

I'd also like to thank 142.177.X.X for some great work s/he's done around here the last days. It was starting to get irritating when s/he was constantly just on a AWR-rage

Just don't want us to go down any wrong paths. Reading the Wikipedia mailing list lately, it's a war zone over there, and when even Wales starts to use terms like sysop vigilantiism you know there's no due process at all. It won't be long now before they have to put some real governance in place, or just give up. Maybe they have enough interest and recognition to recruit that m:board now. But whatever they do it should not be our problem here.

Yesterday I installed Debian on an old box that's been lying around for ages and now I'm playing around with it to get more aquinted with Linux naively hoping to some day accumulate enough *NIX skills to make a living out of it. I am getting into Python also and learning Dutch and German by reading the Wikibooks on them

One thing I need right now is a job.

    Give Juxo a job, please.

I installed MacPython and I'm discovering the language whenever I feel nerdy :) I have also taken to hang around #moin which is the channel for MoinMoinWiki discussions. I hear MoinMoin is very modular which would be an advantage over Mediawiki

They at least keep their parser separate so a wikitext standard will be easy to support. Most of the rest of the advantages come from just being in Python. The D programming language is also very interesting, for high performance code, but hopefully none of that is needed.

    21.2.2004

Yiii! I just got a fresh copy of "The State of The World 2004" by the Worldwatch institute. I'll try to read it through if i get some of my ability to concentrate back and make notes. They have put some good stuff on-line that aligns very well with what we've been discovering. remember to click thru to their Online Feature: Consumption

Yes, worldwatch is very very good.

    20.2.2004

I updated the MySQL dump today but I'm worried that we don't seem to be making progress in developing what we sent out to do. It must be time to do some retrospection and try to clean this wiki up and get some practical solutions to the remaining problems and open questions instead of writing more Anti Wikipedia Rants (AWR).

That would be easier if we were not using mediawiki, which seems to attract diseased flies.
OK, perhaps it's time to knock down the open links (notice that there are few open links in the wiki management discussions! Wikipedia provides so many bad examples that it's easy to dissect it and come up with long lists of things to watch out for!

    17.2.2004

The MySQL dump has been online for over three weeks and there is just one download of it, which I guess is a sign indicating that the general crowd following the development around here wish that we focus and carry on what we've been planning for almost a year now.

    10.2.2004

Trolls request that User:Juxo state some opinion about the issue at User_talk:Angela (deleting talk files that contain clear warnings about things like use of echo chamber tactics). Trolls don't object to moving certain advice to not trust certain people to 142.X.X.X/Flames but we do object to simply deleting talk without answering to any of the points therein. (11.2.2004: note the totally different attitude obvious in 142.X.X.X/Tim_Starling vs. that in 142.X.X.X/Angela - some people know what the issues are and take responsibility for their own actions, others don't care and just excuse themselves based on what others are doing, and these dialogues help make that crystal clear. Conflicts_between_users needs some comment also, and Talk:Wiki_management)
Also, since Wikipedian Trash seem to be willing to come here, there's no good reason to believe that quality people wasting their time at Wikipedia fighting them might not like to come here also, where there's a more level playing field. And more intelligent beliefs about Consumerium Governance at least.

    4.2.2004

It's been looking like for some time now that to make Transparent Consumerium work we will have to develop into the direction of multiple regional wikis thus Consumeria (plural), but the real issue to solve is how to arrange them and make them interact smoothly. If all internal content is licensed under GFDL it would make governance easier because of the ability to fork.

No, just sending dissidents off to compete with you doesn't "make governance easier". There should be one regional Consumerium per ecologically and linguistically sane region, and it must work hard to retain a monopoly. To allow corporate spinoffs and competitors with tons of money to take the same content and create an only slightly fudged version destroys the integrity of the whole system. It's a cop-out. A more robust consortium than GFDL allows for must be there. Creative Commons might allow for the kind of use we need for internal content.

Naturally there will be an international Consumerium for multinational companies and brands. Also an advantage in Consumeria approach is that server load can be broken down into many small streams and connection costs reduced by hosting locally.

Yes, local hosting makes sense, and local variants working in local languages make sense. Permitting arbitrary spinoffs does not. But arbitrary hosting is fine.

    2.2.2004

I'm quite beat now and for the unseen future. There is 40 days remaining to the one-year anniversary of this wiki so maybe try to get this mess fixed by then.

The filling-in process has got stalled due to the need to outline the issues with sysop vandalism and such. However a benefit is that Consumerium now has the best description of what goes wrong on wiki sysop power structure, and is way ahead of Meatball and Meta-Wikipedia and most others in this regard.

I've been a bit absent for a while mainly because I've been on a 24/7 bozo nightmare imagining that depth gauging that swamp is something worthwhile. I shall now conclude this episode by saying it's deep enough so don't do anything seriously stupid like i do sometimes, instead bear with us a little while more and I'll try to come up with some rubus chamaemorus to go with the pancakes. We will need sugar to pickle it though...

A recent dump of cur and old tables is now linked from MySQL dump which means that we are complying with the source-access requirement of the GFDL as noted by our esteemed trolls at XML dump. Modelling SQL as XML is trivial, though if one gets paid to do it then it naturally stops being trivial, enough said.

Now we are living in the fear of a fork, but i can tell that genuine imaginary Consumerium pancakes are better and our imaginary jams are more delicious then the other brand.

So far what we've achieved is:

    1. Quite complete theory of political consumerism
    2. Partial implementation plan to enable 1.
    3. Useless wordplay and information elitism
    4. Bad jokes
    5. Worse grammar

Please don't start Consumerium:Conspiracy theories, cause i'd surely have to spend a long time filling in the "142.177.X.X is actually an troll unidentity of one of the Wikipedia sysops."-part.

No comment on any motives of any troll. That is policy of all good trolls. We don't pretend to know each other's motivations, or care, we only defend each other on procedural grounds. To assume we are all of one mind or set of values is wrong. Our only values in common are those that guarantee that the planet and life itself gets a voice, through us. If Mother Earth were to edit a wiki she would surely be contributing via an anonymous IP number, do you not think?

    22.12.2003

I have to recuperate for a little while more. Please don't flame this wiki totally over this "Right to Troll vs. Right to Delete non-sense offhandedly"-thing. <- That of course pisses you both off. heh. We have to balance in between anarchy and oligarchy (autocracy is out of question, like i don't wanna be it and neither do you, mmkay?), that's been apparent for a long time but how? Now that is a qustion.

Yes, it is apparent. What is also apparent is that both Wikipedia and Disinfopedia provide the worst possible examples of autocracy justifying oligarchy. Neither example can be followed to actually achieve "the truth" - it appears quite likely that Disinfopedia will just become a Democratic Party propaganda machine, while Wikipedia seems to now be a Republican Party or at least military industrial complex propaganda machine. Both of these ought now to be called enemy projects and not essential projects. There was a chance to fix them in 2003. They were not fixed. Now it is time to work on democratize or destroy efforts there. But there can be a truce line drawn and Consumerium can become the project where all the wiser "refugees" come to, drastically expanding participation, if you are careful to recruit those who see the way Disinfopedia and Wikipedia have gone wrong, and NOT those who have been MAKING Disinfopedia and Wikipedia go wrong. That is all up to you as the sysop.
The exclusion of Angela is however a pre-requisite for troll participation. Let her go over to Disinfopedia with her friends, where she (as a creator of propaganda and echo chamber participant) belongs. That is her style - the sysop power structure over there is simply autocratic, period, and that seems to be what she responds to. Do not try to change her into anything useful to this project - she isn't.

Maybe it's time to check out ECCnet (Canada), UCCnet (US), UDEX (UK, France) and AMECE (Mexico) as well as SINFOS (Germany, Austria, Netherland, Spain, Finland), EANnet Australia (Surprise yourself.) I assume therefore I exist?

Hmmm. Interesting new technology for a change. I just got the news (only 2 days old, yippee) that Near Field Communication Technology jointly developed by Sony and Phillips has been approved as an ISO/IEC standard.

    Essential specs:

    • Maximum working distance: 10cm
    • Speed: 106kbps, 212kbps or 424kbps

This could be very useful in product identification if embedded into shelves and mobile phones.

Mostly hanging at Wiktionary and doing some random browsing for a change.

Awww. This wiki is a total mess when it comes to navigation. i guess I have to focus on making all the essential articles accessible from the Main page with max. two clicks... or something. Anyway even I have sorta trouble finding where everything is so I can only begin to imagine how messy this must seem to a newbie.

    3.12.2003

There's only some 600 words in http://wiktionary.org/wiki/Consumerium_translation_lists that need definitions and translations to some 40 or so languages so please pitch in.

I read todays newspaper. Damn, that was a laugh. Ok now to the serious stuff for a change, there was some real news too. In EU there is a fairly new directive that requires producers to take responsibility for recycling E-waste effective 2005. I'll write more on this later.

Today is my day off so I'll just do some offhand translations in Wiktionary today.

Sent mail to Dr. Karl Otto Schallaböck of Wuppertal Institute about User:Juxo/Bluetooth Car. He has been invited to support the secretariat of the UNFCCC and I think he is a senior researcher at the Institute leading the transportation group. I hope he can make an impact because we need Bluetooth cars as soon as possible.

Awww. I've just been lazy today after yesterdays hard work of organizing Features properly. I guess the next important step I should do is to write Preferences but I'm not rushing into it since the prefs can be arranged and grouped in several ways and there are possibilities to cause confusion. I've been doing some casual contributions to Wiktionary, which is actually the only way available untill there are more advanced tools available for editors. Trying to systematically cover some areas is really frustrating with the current software.

    29.11.2003

Ok. Features is now has links for each implementable feature and a link to where each feature will likely be implementated. It is also much more compact providing for better browsing experience.

    28.11.2003

Today I wrote m:Consumerium mainly from the point-of-view of MediaWiki and Consumerium with appropriate links to this Wiki to briefly describe the considerations we have tackled and future considerations. It is in no way complete and I'll work on it some more bit by bit.

    25.11.2003

OK, good, after today's trolling, vandalizing, sysop uppitiness and etc., we have made good progress, and there are now exactly 342 open links in this R&D wiki. That is remarkably small for the complexity of this problem and what we are trying to change. Please review all 342 at this link:

    http://www.consumerium.org/wiki/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Wantedpages&limit=500&offset=0

If there are any terms that are not obviously well-defined to anyone who knows this moral purchasing issue well, then, we should make a simple one-paragraph link to explain simply how "what links here" (to that concept) relates to the Consumerium buying signal, and provide an out-link to w:Wikipedia. PLEASE DON'T put out-links in the text of ANY article - it makes it impossible to find where they are being referenced, and sends readers to Wikipedia by surprise.

After that's done, let's write a bot to go through the remaining open links and just have it create a new page with "An aspect of what links here and what else links here... See w:name_of_this_article for details." That's fine.

I know it's a pain to have 500 short articles that don't add much value, but, they add *some* value (encouraging people to explore common conceptual roots or common dependencies), and they *keep readers here*. There's a reason we don't have more than three or four people in this creative network - most of our best advertised pages are sending people elsewhere. That's necessary in the beginning when we're trying to educate people.

But now, we need to establish our own slant on as many as 500 concepts that have to be well understood to make this healthy buying infrastructure self-funding and unstoppable even by Gus Kouwenhoven - ah I can spell that now! Making Richard Stallman happy with it is much harder I think.

For the very first time, ever, the first hundred or so of the http://www.consumerium.org/wiki/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Wantedpages have only obvious definitions that can be probably one paragraph with some internal links explaining relevance of the concept to Consumerium and then just linking off to Wikipedia or Disinfopedia or something for greater depth.

To be exact, all non-obvious terms mentioned on more than 2 pages are now defined at least to draft quality. This is a quite important milestone and it means it's now time to dig through every concept that is uniquely defined here and try to simplify it somewhat, so that people from all those 54 countries with even just Simple English will start to understand what we are doing.

There are also incidentally used terms and some whose relevance to Consumerium is not obvious, but, a review of "What links here" for each of them would be of some value in figuring out why they're mentioned. Really we need the following http://www.consumerium.org/wiki/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Wantedpages To be on the front page.

Somehow i understand this so that the people who don't have a home are just looking for a home and the people who already have a home are too busy being envious of other homes or otherwise just not appreciating what they have and in the worst case both. I say that I'm just going to do little this and that to make the place i call home nicer and continue recycling cartons and bottles and papers and biowaste and metals and try hard to keep my fixed line internet from being cut off due to unpaid bills, eat some, drink some and try to do something constructive every now and then. When I get a job I'll figure out what else I do then.

    10.11.2003

We were out of service for a little while today due to a power blackout where the server is located.

I just checked the fresh logs and am a little proud to announce that http://www.consumerium.org has been viewed from 54 distinct countries.

    8.11.2003

Switching ISPs again. Mail is rerouted and I even managed to get my old mail safe :) Hope to get back to you soon. I saw it as spot the three clobots and stop them or don't. Either way

Ok. Now back online. I even found some ethernet cables which give me 0% packet loss :)

    6.11.2003

I gotta sleep 'round now. I'll sleep thight and wake up to edit more clearly and with higher precision (unless someone bothers my sleep) *GRRR*

    5.11.2003

I'm sorry for being so inactive for a long time. I'm just really sick and tired of the triple morality and other shit so prevalent here where I live. The triple morality being:

    1. The public public morality, troublessly recordable and broadcastable and widely rocognised
    2. The secret public morality. Known by many but not voiceable without considerable threat to one's character and public reputation
    3. The secret morality, which is allegedly known only to self, and the quality of it is a major problem of the individual in question

Ok. That said I hope to get back on track tomorrow. We need to focus on getting Content Wiki running as soon as possible. The solving of management (Instructional capital) issues prior to it's launch are crucial. If we launch it as beta/test phase we don't necassarily finish the technical issues, but rather migrate the content into the more advanced environment when it's built. Whether Opinion Wiki and Content Wiki should be intgrated into one wiki is unresolved. There are strong arguments for and against. Ease and simplicity being the reasons for one wiki and security and scalability being the arguments for two wikis.

Ok. This is a Blog, blog is just a web page where all the content is in reverse chronological order (kinda redundant: a blog in a wiki, but I'll see if this works). You may comment on posts if you like, but please be sensible and do it on the talk page

    27.10.2003

Still hoping to be revitalized. It must be this increasing darkness of the fall that I haven't gotten around to do some serious work around here. Well well...

And a note on a practical issue. Today there were some outages due to software upgrades on our host.

    18.10.2003

My connection got fixed (I payed the overdue bill, which might have something to do with it).

I'm off to an undisclosed location for a couple of days and hope to come back revitalised.

    17.10.2003

Very tired and very occupied with other matters for a few more days. In a desperate attempt to relax I saw two movies today: "Sibelius", which was about this famous finnish compositor and "My Life Without Me", which was about the state of humanity in developed northern countries circa 2002... or something. This combination helped so shoutouts go to Isabel Coixet and The Almodovar Brothers for making this nice picture. I hope endorsements are not forbidden in the rules ;)

    16.10.2003

Trolls request your attention at Metaweb:authored vs. anonymous pages. The standards they set, should be the straw man for the standards we set. We may need to vary ours very much, but, we should start from what they can agree on.

    16.10.2003

I have some pressing non-consumerium matters that i have to attend to now, but I must say that I'm excited by the way things are going. We seem to have reached a stage where the theoretic groundwork is fairly done, but now there are serious practical issues to resolve like licensing schemes used in Opinion Wiki and Content Wiki and of course the issue of how to not get sued. Resolving governance is also a big problem, since vandalism and other mischief has to be dealt with, but that is going to result in lots of flames to those who have to draw the line on what is acceptable and what is not.

To minimize the threat of a flamestorm the instructional capital has to be well thought out and well defined and expressed.

    12.10.2003

Oh, the eternal incoherence. I guess I should merge The Consumerium Exchange and what is presented in User:Juxo/Thinking aloud into Wikinion but I'm sorta vary of it since it'll propably just create more incoherence and sooner or later someone might point out why it won't work that way either.

Now if we implement this WikiVote thing then there are two or three different types of votes and three is too much imho.

But the "new" Wiki approach and the original vision can be brought closer by using strictly named subarticles that are then "collapsed" into a viewable document for the consumer based on her/his preferences ie. articles and their subarticles form a tree and preferences define what branches and leaves are visible and in what order. If you want to see ecological stuff first when fine. If you want labor issues first, fine. If you want consumer reviews first, fine. And this way we can have more fine grained version control (signatures) and editors can concentrate on the subarticle that is closest to their expertese. Also newbie editors are less likely to get irritated over the syntax requirements that are not usually present in wikis. Parsing monolithic articles would also hog more resources

    11.10.2003

The Controlfreak In Charge of Irrigation Systems kindly asks you to fasten your wiki-seatbelts. There is a revision of the revision in the works and it's more Wiki then ever before. bbl

Majority of campaign management and voting on campaigns is going to be wiki-based with a varying level of security measures to make it comfortable for those less paranoid and those more paraniod.

    8.10.2003

After the upgrade to the new MediaWiki version I should take some time to go through the articles to format them to make for informative and precise TOCs. But today I have some other business to take care of.

    5.10.2003

Ok, I guess that todays additions are enough for you over-advantaged info junkies. I'm especially exited about the addition of future products to campaignable issues: It works in numerous ways and directions.

    4.10.2003

No. I still haven't thought this thing through, but even I have lot's of problems figuring out where to find stuff in this Wiki eventhough I've written most of the articles, so that is a clear signal that we are in need of some serious housekeeping here.

After the introduction of the The revised design paradigm the plan is roughly that facts should go to the Content Wiki and opinions should go to the The Consumerium Exchange and over half of the articles contain totally outdated and misleading "information"

This wiki needs to be in a coherent state. Currently this is so messy that the mess propably inhibits us from aqcuiring new contributors (not that I have actually ever advertised the concept anywhere outside of the 'pedia, word-of-mouth and a few casual emails).

This shit is complicated! The interaction between The Backend, The Content Wiki and The Consumerium Exchange and the UI of the Consumer is a really problematic question.

    I wonder what's going on. Juxo 19:21 Oct 4, 2003 (EEST)

My brain just got overloaded. BBL. Juxo 19:32 Oct 4, 2003 (EEST)

User:Juxo/Thiking aloud??? maybe i should sleep every now and then ;)

Hmm. Tidying this wiki is turning out to be not simple. I should really write some summaries so that people who are just getting introduced to this could quickly grasp the general "feel", but instead i seem to wonder around the wiki fixing one think and breaking two or more at the same time ;)

I'll go to sleep now and the trolls will fix everything while I'm asleep. yes?

    3.10.2003

I must take some time to think about The Consumerium Concept as a whole...hmm....like...hwo do i expalin this when i'm not sure what are the questions i should be asking.... Simplicity and Elaborate being to poles, gotta figure out the trajectory... or something.

This is a very delicate waypoint in the development process, so here is a link and here is an another. If you gotta troll, please be gentle this time. Mmkay??

    1.10.2003

There are plenty of outdated pages, lots of unresolved issues and propably even more questions that have not even been voiced publicly that have to be tackled before we can even dream of moving on to an implementation stage, but we are going to get there one day. Please help if you can.

Now that most of the theoretical building blocks seem to be somewhere around here it's time to start figuring out how to make it work in practice, which raises a horde of open questions. I will try my best to deal with the numerous rising issues, but not today. The rigidness offered by XML solutions combined with the flexibility of Wikicode might be a good solution for storing and serving content. Must think about this some more before trying to write out an implementation plan.

Look into tikiwiki and MoinMoinWiki (a Python thing). Both are far more flexible than this wikipedia3 stuff, and more scalable. I think the general move is to tikiwiki in the larger world. So we should move to it, too.
I looked into TikiWiki 1.4 back in the day when I was trying to find a CMS to do this R&D stuff and at least then it was slow and bloated with features we don't need. And besides there is a strong need (from the Consumerium point of view) to interact with Wikipedia and other sites running MediaWiki so we shouldn't move to TikiWiki for the time being.

    27.9.2003

Since none of the trolls have objected to the framework of The Consumerium Exchange I wrote down earlier on I guess it is time to move on to the details, which have to be carefully crafted to keep the voting process simple yet resistant to tampering.

It's not a bad starting point, as it stands. Might as well work out more details.

There are numerous other issues that have to be re-evaluated due to the change of the design paradigm from XML to Wiki for the actual content. Propably the most prominent problems being the multi-language/Internationalization issue.

And one more thing: I need a job cause like being unemployed (read: without "permanent" source of buying power) kinda hampers my motivation to do this stuff. So if you know someone who needs an employee please tell them that I'm available.

    11.9.2003

The quasi-constant flamerybaitteringishness is fatiguing me, so i'm off for a while. Seeya.

I'm _so_ gone celebrating! It's about time to get really really focused and rewrite half of the contents of the wiki. Thanks to Shamath. You the ****ing geniuses.

    30.8.2003

Sorry for the harsh language, bad metaphors and general disorientation of my recent edits, I'll fix them sometime.

    28.8.2003

Giguu. My GPRS is working, not perfectly, but it'll have to do and I got me some XDSL too. Now all I have to do is to find a ethernet cable that isn't broken. And I need a job so please give me one if you can.

    27.8.2003

I'm _so_ going to have the mother of all nervous breakdown if i don't get 24hrs internet in the next couple of days. I'm on gsm-data @ 9600 bps for "mere" 17 cents a minute right now.

    26.8.2003

I'm working on some Improvements to the Wikipedia software because I want to give something back to the 'pedia community. Maybe if I come up with enough braincandy for the developers they might implement m:Placetime markup, which would be just the thing we need for Consumerium. It been clear for a while that the part XML is playing in consumerium design will propably be replaced by wiki markup where ever applicable. It's sad that the Sourceforge ConsuML activity percentile is at 0%, but there is a lot of hassle in my life at the moment and all the trolls are still at the beach... or something. I'll try to scratch up some pseudocode for m:HACSAW when I find the time.

    25.8.2003

I'm officially moving to w:Helsinki this week and I hope to get some money so i can get on XDSL (gets connected the same day) before I can get my ADSL hooked up again. (month or so) I've been busy bothering the Wikipedia developers about HACSAW, but they seem to be persistent that I should learn to program for myself (again, *sigh*) and stop bothering them with my infantile "I want this done, but I'm not going to do it myself"-attitude. hummm....

Anyways... I have to rewrite User:Juxo/Wikipedia software ideas to be more clear and I guess i could pseudocode some of the simpler stuff recorded there. Also must think about how m:HACSAW should be done right and pseudocode it, since it isn't picking up the wind I thought it would.

Oh. And I'm going to install the new codebase here on Consumerium, the auto-TOC is just too nice to not have here... Unfortunatelly I'll have to do it all over again when the link anchor feature that Magnus has been working on gets to the stable tree. Having no command line php i guess i have to do it all manually.

Now I'm off to see my cousin, who'se flying in from London. Haven't seen her for ages.

I'll get on track once I get this moving hassle out of the way. <- Yeay, I know I say that a lot.

    22.8.2003

Basically all my machines and connections broke so I decided to go sailing, which was nice and relaxing. I'll get my technology sorted soon and get active again in advancing our goals. I've had some pretty good ideas conserning convergence with Wikipedia and Wiktionary lately, but unfortunatelly all I have is this archaic technology that makes it unnecessarily hard to get any ideas and directions recorded before they vanish from my mind due to not having access to the wiki immediatelly and the number of other issues occupying my mind. I need a job and a reliable connection both fixed and wireless to give a full contribution ...or something. Bear with me, please.

    14.8.2003

Stupid machines stop annoying me and start working properly!

    13.8.2003

I keep on forgetting what I'm supposed to be doing :(

    12.8.2003

Being homeless for a while I have no decent connection to the net so you'll have to excuse me for my inactivity

    6.8.2003

Well I went sailing for a few days. Unfortunatelly my phone broke during an upgrade and my laptop's battery is also totally cooked, so I could not write up the ideas that came to me inspired by the lovely refreshing sea air and relaxment. Today there was some quite rough weather and I'm really tired so I'll go to sleep now, but I'll be up and running soon.

Where is everybody? I have to draw the conclusion that all the trolls have sneaked off to the beach.

    24.7.2003

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ConsuML is under GPL now. This has upsides and downsides and sides that have not yet appearred to me

    Downsides:

    • Makes forking easier
    • Makes development work more susceptible to chaotic phenomenon. I suppose it's perfectly legal to modify the schema outside of the project CVS and still mark it xmlns="http://ns.consumerium.org/consuml/", though this I consider to be extremely bad behaviour and can be counter-measured by checking for xsi:schemaLocation="http://ns.consumerium.org/consuml/ ..."

    Upsides:

    • Makes forking easier
    • Makes development work more dynamic: If some party wants a new feature they can modify the schema to accomondate the new feature and build demo software and that way if their addition makes sense it'll likely be integrated into Consumerium
    • If Consumerium fails to realize it's goals maybe some other project can benefit from our work

    20.7.2003

It's too hot to work today, but tomorrow (monday) I'll kick my butt to get things moving for a change. Thanks to the folks at finnkino for eradicating the obsolete sound system, it is _much_ better now. Thanks to T for providing the way out, I'll do just that.... tomorrow. Now I'm off to have a couple of beers with friends.

    18.7.2003

I'm in Helsinki for a change and I managed to get IP-masquerading to work on the machine that's sitting here where I lodge, so I have a decent connection (most of the time) now and I get the feeling that my system is healthier then it's been in a long time.... perhaps it's that newest security upgrade. I don't know, but this feels, looks and sounds better then in a loooong time, just like the lovely dolby digital that's replaced the obsolete thx in theatres here in helsinki. I should get myself sorted now that my machine seems to have ceased to fuck my brain up so totally.

    15.7.2003

I've reinstalled my system and all I can do is to hope that it starts cooperating now.

    13.7.2003

My system is so not working as it should, which slows me down since I don't trust this machine anymore it is hard for me to think about computer related things without get brought down by the fact that once again I have a machine that just doesn't act properly. I think I'll slowdown to sleep now.

    8.7.2003

I bought some great dutch fair trade, organic coffee but forgot to get the tinfoil i need for my hat...

    7.7.2003

Gotta run some errands today. I talked with a friend of mine about the security problems facing the system if it ever gets built and we came to the conclusion that there is no such thing as security when it comes to computers... but if it turns out that there is this should come close http://tinfoilhat.shmoo.com/ Single floppy bootable Linux with some nice features like using the numlock key to morse code encrypted messages out in case you think the display hardware is compromised and gpggrid to counter the keystrokeloggers.

Oh. It's so quiet. I suspect our usual trolls are off to the beach. I should study the SA8000 and write an article on it. I should propably put it in Wikipedia, since it's not consumerium specific. There is some info on SA8000 in w:Moral purchasing.

    5.7.2003

Feeling tired today. I just finished and sent a job application. I hope I get the job, because it sounded like a nice job and I have zero income at the moment and my money is running out fast and the job is _NOT_ in Turku. I'm gonna relax by doing some wiktionary now. no-life? me? ;)

    3.7.2003

Back on ADSL, but gotta run some errands for a few days. But I'll post an exciting link I got from a newspaper in Helsinki. http://www.sa8000.org/ According to DNV SA8000 was developed by nonprofit foundation by the name of Council on Economic Priorities (CEP), but this organisation doesn't like seem to exist anymore. strange.

    1.7.2003

On the road again, so working is kinda slow due to the slow connection, but something is still slowly happening. I just posted the wikified Consumerium ry luonnos, which is in Finnish. It's a draft for rules of the Consumerium Association of Finland. Don't freak out now. I'm not planning to make this association the CGO, it'll just join the CGO as a national member when the CGO gets formed.

People are going on and on about how this is wiki is being governed, when there are more important issues to solve, like licenses and instructional capital for "who gets to say what about who on what grounds". Governance by ice cream and shadow governace by biting in the leg is the style that's worked out quite well so far.

Hmmm... Really important questions by 66.163.X.X and a constructive approach which the usual inhabitants of our funny garden have been missing for some while. I have some practical, real world issues to take care of today, but I will most certainly try to address the issues introduced or highlighted by 66.193.X.X today.

    28.6.2003

My own machine is very likely being so rooted by an unknown party. This does not neccessarily affect consumerium, unless my shell passwd to the host running the wiki has been exposed. Anyway the situation is not good.

I took care that there is a current (28.6.2003) mysqldump in several safe places now. I should arrange for this to be done automatically every once in a while.

    27.6.2003

Still disorientated and not doing anything worth mentioning.... sorry about that. I'll try and get my head together that I can do something useful to advance the project.

    26.6.2003

Hmmm... This is the strangest thing. After feeling sad, lonely and disorientated for the whole day then suddenly my mood improved dramatically. Suddenly I felt warmth and a sense of direction. I wonder what caused this... Well I'm not going to do any work today still and I know that it's genrally a foolish thing to report psychological occourrences to the net, but something tells me I should share this with you. Juxo 19:22 Jun 26, 2003 (EEST)

And I have food, yummy :)

    25.6.2003

Hum-hum. It seems we have 221 unique red links with at least two pointers to them. I agree with our Über-Troll that we shouldn't rush into defining terms too early, but I'll go through the unambiguous ones and put at least short definitions.

Hmm.. URL-syntax like http://www.consumerium.org/wiki/wiki.phtml?title=Special:Recentchangeslinked&target=Features&days=30&limit=500 produces Recent Changes on articles that are linked from Features. Handy.

want a secret ? go on an article. look at the bottom of the page. Click on related changes. There you have it ;-) Don't repeat. That is a secret.

Ok. Let's keep it a secret. I'll do my part by brushing my teeth and going to sleep
sweet dreams. I'll do the same

    23.6.2003

Today I'm still finishing maintenance on my machines and I have to do some laundry too so it's a bit slow today.

Here are some links that fit together:

I'm wondering about the relationship between EURONICE (over 17000 terms) and UNSPSC (16384 terms). Both describe products and product groups. Google gives zero hits when searching for both... I'm on it. Oh yes... I found a topic map that was automatically built from UNSPSC it's in XTM-format. Must get some tools to look at it. You can find it here if you want to take a look.

I'm borderlining on IOD: It seems that UN has more then one classification scheme for products. You can browse Inventory of Classifications at UNSD's site... look at CPC (Central Product Classification)... it's way overlapping with UNSPSC. Way to go UN.

    22.6.2003

I'm in a train to my ADSL now, but I won't get to do any work for a while because I have to do some serious maintenance on my GNU/Linux box. Midsummer was nice and relaxing. Not as warm as I had hoped for but still ok weather.

Private System maintenance still in progress... looks like it's going to take all the day. This does not affect consumerium.org in any way

    19.6.2003

Today I sent an e-mail to gnu@gnu.org to inquire if they have knowledge on previous experiences on licensing XML DTDs, Schemas and XSLT under GPL, because the sensibility of this is a big questionmark, or is it...

If we have GPL Schema and someone modifies it without notifying us (which they are allowed to do) and makes a document following the altered grammar and tries to input it into the system. The software checks it's validity against the Schema it has and determines it is not compliant and the document is not processed, because the software doesn't know how to process it.

Ok. That's it 142.177.X.X, you're the trolliest troll I've ever met. It was nice to inform us that we are not fully complying with GFDL at the moment, but otherwise I'd say that you're just making me even more confused by mixing rantings about content licensing issues and software licensing issues.

Instructional capital regarding the content related issues mentioned in what we are supposed to be doing and in what order is something I've been trying to work out for over 2 years and I hope I'm nearing a solution and I need to relax now, so I'm off to an undisclosed location to enjoy the midsummer festival and I hope to spend some time not thinking about consumerium and wish that my subconsious solves it for me.

    18.6.2003

Nothing much happened today. I spent most of the day thinking about The Consumerium Exchange, which is once again coming up soon ;)

I'm off to celebrate midsommer festival tomorrow or friday at last, but I'll propably take my iBook with me so I can make some edits too. I'm in a need of a vacation from this stuff, but on the other hand it's just starting all to come together in my mind so I can't leave this alone. Going to sleep now...ZZZZ

    17.6.2003

Special Thanks to User:Stephen Gilbert informing us about Greenscan project and vice-versa.

And the theme of today is:

    File:Ayb.jpg

If you want to know what this is about search the net for "cuecat" (registered trademark of http://www.digitalconvergence.com/ )

Now I'm off the link harvest the Greenscan project pages.

Harvesting done. Enjoy. I put them in User:Juxo/Scratchpad because I just don't have the time to write proper articles on these. Maybe the articles should be written into Wikipedia. Let's give some back to the community, the 'pedia has given us so much resources. Juxo 15:09 Jun 17, 2003 (EEST)

I still keep thinking about the licenses, because if I had hastily started developing the actual software under GPL it would have lead to serious trouble (no way of verifying that the clients (or even worse: servers) aren't modified to do something they shouldn't). I still think it's safe to make the XML (ConsuML as the working draft name is at the moment) available under GPL... if someone adds something to the grammar that isn't supported by the processing software for some reason, then they get an error message, or the elements and attributes that are not recognised are ignored in the processing.

Coming up soon The Consumerium Exchange... But before I take that on I'm going to have a shower, eat, try to relax and maybe see some friends.

    16.6.2003

Today I'm off to Wikipedia and Google to see if I can get some relevant articles started.

I started w:List of company registers and plan on working on it regularly and I hope you contribute too since finding these using the ordinary search tools is not easy due to the widely varying naming policy of the register/office/agency/organisation handling these and I suppose one could see some national advantage in having these services difficult to find using the internet.

Other significant finding today is OHMI. The databases they offer advance our effort greatly, if we can just negotiate unlimited access to them (Daily updated mirrors would do just nicely).

    15.6.2003

Today I'll see if I can scribble down something sensible about developing XML, to aid the Sourceforge project get on it's way once it's started. Maybe I should surf a little to assess what grammars we should include in our interoperability goals.

I just read the morning paper and the situation here in Finland is that all the three major mobile carriers are offering similar GPRS-deals: 100MB of GPRS data / month for under 20?, so it's likely that, at least here, Consumerium service deployment using XHTML UI over GPRS is quickly coming feasible. Finland is on the forefront of mobile technology adaption so the price and service competition is fierce in here, but I believe this case is similar to how sub 50$ fixed ADSL services spread from the US to rest of the developed countries.

gotta run now... switching to GPRS so the "flooding" will slow now ;)

14.6.2003 Did you know that there are approximatelly 48.179 different stocks listed in stock exchanges of the planet? Now you know. I'm going to get something to eat now.

I'm doing mostly browsing today and some editing in w:, seems we have accumulated some info that is not in the 'pedia so it's time to give back to the community we can thank for great software and vast information sources.

I'll try and avoid this senseless copy-paste-linking frenzy that's infested so many traditional sites ("Hey, look this site uses at least three of the same words as us, let's add a link to our links-page!").

Here's something that might turn into a precious gem from w:Economy of Earth if people just worked on it.

That's it... totally IOD for today.

    13.6.2003

I'm in the process of looking for a job since my last job was only a 6 month contract and now I basically have no source of income and I've noticed that when being totally broke my brain doesn't work well at all. It's a total bummer not to be able to buy some food or a cup of coffee or whatever when going about your business. If you want to hire me you know how you can contact me. Preferably I'm looking for something that allows me to take a peek at consumerium throughout the day and maybe make a minor edit or two to be honest.

    12.6.2003

Yes! I'm writing this over Bluetooth+GPRS-connection. It's not fast and there seems to be some reliability problems, but it's freedom to contribute whenever I have my laptop and phone with me :)

We're celebrating LÄSPÄ (actually LÄSPÄ of 2002, which didn't get celebrated so we're doing it now) today, so I won't be working much on cium today and I'm leaving my ADSL for w:Helsinki, but I have my 3650 with me so you can expect updates daily.

    11.6.2003

    I started

    10.6.2003

I lost my old phone or it got stolen so now I scraped up all the money I could get and bought a Nokia 3650 and got an GPRS-connection that should be operational tomorrow and after that I'm free to roam and work on cium at the same time. My initial reaction to the phone is good. Bluetooth+GPRS+camera allows me to draw a scetch on paper, take a photo and then put it on the net. A little simpler then using GIMP to do the same ;) As I suspected the people behind the codec is Hantro, an w:Oulu, w:Finland based company. I saw some of their codecs at a fair in 2000 and they were very impressive, even as low as 100kbps streams were just sheer magic. After that I haven't heard or seen any of this company in the public, but they rule when it comes to codecs.

I installed some programs (packages are suffixed sis) mostly written in Cplusplus and I have to say I'm going to have to take a crash-course in C++ development since the programs perform really nicely and it seems to be the primary choice of language to implement Consumer Agent

I know I haven't been as active as possible lately, but this could change for the better now that I can connect whenever I need to (just as soon as they get my connection operational)

    6.6.2003

Today I contacted Prof. U.B. Lindström and asked if he would like to contribute to the project. He is retired and to my understanding a normative authority in the field of organic farming, ecology, development and globalisation issues. Let's hope he has some time for us.

Also sent some email to http://adbusters.org to get us included on their links page and also contacted someone who might be able to help us in determining ownerships of US companies.

    Going to sleep now...

    5.6.2003

Baracoda Pencil is just what we need to get the UI Consumerium deserves. Great stuff by http://www.baracoda.com . Best regards to them!

http://archive.org doesn't have us indexed, but is that a bad or a good thing? I don't know. Stupid silly mistakes are forgotten, excpecially with little SQL, but on the other hand we can't track the development from the Archive later on and it's kind of annoying not to be in the archive.org.

I just looked up the log and ia_archiver has been to the site on 6 different occasions starting from February so it's even stranger that we're not showing up in http://archive.org and, no, our robots.txt doesn't prohibit it from crawling. Go figure. Juxo 19:42 Jun 5, 2003 (EEST)

    4.6.2003

I've noticed we don't have anything on Bluetooth. w:Bluetooth is not good and has errors. Since adaptation of Bluetooth is so crucial to our project we should have a special page just for tracking Bluetooth news.... things like Apple has integrated both WiFi and Bluetooth in their high-end PowerBook models and Sony's high-end DVs have also integrated Bluetooth.

3.6.2003 the URLs are a pain. Can you get Wikipedia-like URLs working?

http://consumerium.org/wiki/glossary for instance should just go to the wiki-editable glossary, and

They're not a pain, they're just not like on 'pedia. It can be done with mod_rewrite (Apache module) and I'll get on it tomorrow or the day after that

http://consumerium.org/glossary should go to an approved or known/older version. Maybe 48 hours after it appears as the wiki version, it becomes the standard version, unless it changes again.

This I don't follow. I've been thinking of setting up some static pages like "Executive Summary" and "Press releases", but there's much to wiki before this type of html-pages are a priority.

    2.6.2003

Something interesting going on at http://www1.ean-ucc.org/gdd/ (GDD == EAN.UCC Global Data Dictionary) I've just glanced at it and I'm not really sure what it really is but it's got a bunch of XML Schemas that make up maybe more then half of the markup needed for Consumerium. Keep an eye on this one, because EAN.UCC, is like big, in the area of identifying things.

Just wrote an article to http://indymedia.org . Propably a bad time due to the G8-summit going on at the moment. Also started crafting a new front page, with tables and some sort of hierarchy. This is not going to be an easy one, but the current front page is not good.

    1.6.2003

Today I heard on BBC World service that you can get the best profit margins in which continent? Surprise (or is it?)... Africa(!).

THE LAST EDIT BY ME WAS NOT BY ME! FUCKING SPOOFERS. I'LL DO A TRACEROUTE FROM WHERE I WAS ON 27.5.2003. to our serv and narrow down the possible offenders, though the password could have been compromised earlier on and I basically guess which company I can thank for this shit. Well, I changed my pass now...

    27.5.2003 Country side was lovely.

where do consumers meet and talk together ? You know, I have an old memory. I was working in an organic farm during summer...counting on my fingers...14 years ago (whaouuu...I feel "old"). The moments I loved the most were
weeding some chinese vegetable or picking up tiny vegetables (potatoes). We were two people sitting in a row next to each other, chatting for hours about...why, when, how...our fingers were busy, and without thinking, we went to our business. So we could chat...and sometimes picked up a worm or an insect
the farmer's market. Where you buy w:local food. Early, we left in the truck. First we had restaurant people, they were often in a hurry. Did not talk much. Then, we had the HouseElves, always cravings for chit chat. Part of our business :-). Later, we had the tourists, the wanderers. Chatting too. Last, we had the poors. Often, they felt guilty, and they hid themselves. I would have liked them to be the free consumers, but, I was not the boss. Then, we could come back. To another day of weeding, picking up and washing. Or lake swimming when it was too hot. The mature melon was so good. Such a long time ago. Farmers often talk when busy with their hands. If they have someone to talk to, poor souls.

20.5.2003 Gone to the country side to relax.

17.5.2003 I'm actually typing this in a military fort and I was a little surprised to find a connected machine at free disposal of the soldiers. I had to get up at 4 am after sleeping for 3 hours so I'm a little tired now and will get back to this on monday. Consumer Consortium == Consumerium. I like that 142.177.X.X :)

16.5.2003 I run into Brion on IRC the other day and explained our need to have m:Geospatial reference so he started the page on Meta and hopefully someone will come up with a syntax that we can agree on and maybe one day it'll be implemented, which would be great for Consumerium. I'm off to do a few days of military service now. Back on monday, have a nice weekend you all.

10.5.2003 Ehlo from w:Espoo. I should be back on my ADSL next week. Throat still sore.

    9.5.2003

I've had a slightly sore throat for sometime now and I'm trying to get over that so I can get back to some serious contributing. It seems that everyone is more interested in writing fancy declarations and describing elaborate concepts then getting down to the "real" work of specifying software components, which I understand because the one taking charge of the software development will have to face the issue of making it secure, which is stressful.

    7.5.2003

You know what? I'm going to sleep now.

    6.5.2003

Ok. Recovered from the previous. I took some time off from work and I'm in w:Helsinki now to see some friends and relax. I will of course try to contribute as much as I can, but I'm currently under a lot of mental strain in my private life, so I'm not so efficient at the moment.

    30.4.2003

Good Walpurgis Day (Vappu in Finnish, the celebration of students and workers in Finland) everybody. I'm going to get just totally drunk in Raisio today and I'll propably continue the same tomorrow since it's a national tradition in Finland and it's good fun as well :)

    29.4.2003

I just stumbled upon http://www.vrxml.org, (Vendor Reporting...) I really can't figure out what it like _really_ is but at first glance it seems to be some effort by NYSE so standardize vendor contact information, which would be kind of nice if it pulled through, because then we could use VRXML (or just make our XML compatible to it) to identify companies, their subdivisions and contact people withing companies (For arranging feedback and up-to-date company info and such)

I don't know exactly what they (NYSE) mean by vendor or why they want monthly reports of inventory. I don't see how it should intrest a stock exchange what is the inventory of some company... I mean that if the inventory goes down, then liquid assets usually go up and vice-versa, so what does that have to do with trading stocks??

From there on I followed some link and found out that there is an w:ISO standard for identifying subdivisions of countries (States, Provinces and such): ISO 3166-2 Codes for the representation of names of countries and their subdivisions -- Part 2: Country subdivision code

The bad news is that a copy of the standard costs CHF 194,00, which is a lot of money and I personally am so broke at the moment and if I got some I would buy a bluetooth phone, so I could connect to the net, when I'm away from my ethernet. I guess we'll just have to use Wikipedia to get country divisions.

do you plan geographical identification to be only per country ?
Noooo. We'll implement identification of multiple overlapping geographical areas. Mainly country, province village (includes cities), ecoregion and the joins of the before mentioned (eg. Some countries form an free trade area). If I'm missing something essential, please add it.

Yeeees. The new Safari update finally arrived. Tabbed browsing is very nice.
Oh Noooo. I'm so convinced that my system is compromised, not the one running the wiki, but my iBook. I just have to hope that the firmware is still good, so reinstalling the OS will cure the problem:

    bash-2.05a$ cat subscriptions.xml
    bash: lcat: command not found

If someone knows if there is a hotkey to put a password lock on in Mac OS X, please let me know. I dislike going to System Preferences all the time to turn screen saver locking on and off.

sorryyyyy, still on 9. Good night.

    28.4.2003

Today I have burn-out and I don't have the strength to read through your todays contributions or to contribute myself. I hope to get myself together soon and join the effort again. I'll read through the new material soon.

    25.4.2003

Back on ADSL. Houston we have a problem: I have to admit that I would lie to keep a job if I really needed it and I imagine there are lots of other people that would do the same. I would even lie not to make my employer look bad and thus decrease the livelyhood of my fellow employees.

    23.4.2003

Helo. I'm in w:Tampere now. I stumbled upon this internet bus that is a free service provided by the library of tampere :) Respect to library of tampere. I just wrote a stub on Consumerium:Philosophy, alert the hordes of trolls.

    16.4.2003

I'm going away to the country side to relax and enjoy the quitness over Easter, so please don't vandalise anything while I'm gone and if you do it won't last that long. mysqldump rules ok. Have a nice Easter you all. Oh, and I grabbed also a copy of http://meta.wikipedia.org so I'll have a good idea where should we target our efforts there when I get back.

I appologise for being so immature as to get all worked up by some advanced Troll. Now I'm finally off to the woods to contemplate on the meaning of Easter.

    15.4.2003 16:45 UTC+2

Wrote an small article on Consumerium in Wikipedia. Next I'll go for gross overlinking from anything and everything and meaningless minor edits to w:Consumerium to keep it popping up in Recent Changes. hehhehheehheehheehh *grin*

Paul R. Lees-Haley's description of how scares are caused is interesting in context of consumerium - because, people will try to influence buying with phony scares, so how does consumerium ensure information is accurate or balanced properly?

    14.4.2003

Excellent additions at XML/DTD by some IP. Especially the stuff on w:ecoregion. Also go see responsible shopper it's really convergent with our goal. We should contact them to discuss synergy matters.

    Some stats from analog:

       13: 3.23%: 286: 3.29%: 2.423: 3.37%: googlebot.com

Some fanatic w:Internet Troll from 142.177.X.X (which seems to be in Canada) is really wearing me out. This troll is very advanced: cross-defining terms mixed with useful input mixed with malformed grammar mixed with links to strange discussions and very talented in getting pseudo-offended when I reverse edits.

    7.4.2003

Ok. Back online with my most trustworthy operator and I changed my pass also so there shouldn't be anymore severe security breaches like the f***ing vandalists who tinted the 0.1 logo centre yellow, which was really offensive and pissed off lots of ppl. If someone has GIMP and an idea for logo 0.3 it's most welcome. Must sleep now.

    2.4.2003

Today I'm in w:Helsinki now and I can't get access to freenode network from the local irc client here :( Maybe in future we set up an IRC channel #consumerium on freenode, but it's not a priority at the moment.

All the features should have names and their own dedicated page. I'll get on that.

Maybe we should have some products to play around with to illustrate the features, so here is an tomato

    27.3.2003

Here is an interesting article providing some serious critique of using structured document to represent human knowledge. I've been very tempted to mix XML with some heavy Wiki for Consumerium before, but this makes it even more attractive.

Foundation ontology questions? Very sticky. Start with ecology, harder to go wrong.

    24.3.2003

Here is a link http://www.xml.com/pub/a/2003/03/19/standards.html to an interesting article. Dimitri Dimitriatis seems to have a clear perception of the need to identify the software components involved in web services. If the server and client components are GPL'd then there is no guarantee that the components function as specified in the "official" specification. Or is there? Wondering....

    21.3.2003

Ok. I'm going to Helsinki for the weekend, so please don't vandalise Consumerium while I'm gone. I'm taking a database dump with me, so I'll upload my edits on Sunday if I'm not too lazy/drunk on the weekend to do some work.

    21.3.2003

Today I'm mostly creating stubs for describing different features and their implementation in detail. Most feature pages are also used for laying out basic design principles. I'm starting with the simplest features and then working on to the more complex ones, so I can link the complex ones to the simpler ones which they build on.

    20.3.2003

Today I'm thinking about campaigns, they can be calls for boycott or endorsment. They can be targeted at individual products product groups, brands, companies, corporations, supply chains or areas. Areas can be provinces or countries. It just seems that the nation state is a little unprecise for an campaign, but I don't have a better nominator for campaigning. Boycotting capital would be a really nice feature, but it's utopia at the moment. There are numerous reasons why tracking capital is so difficult that it's not feasible.

I'll get started on including markup for locations in wikipedia soon. It' just a really demanding task even just to write a good article and wikitech-l post about it so the idea woun't get torpedoed immediatelly.

    19.3.2003

Really tired today, so not doing much

    18.3.2003

I've been thinking about why on earth doesn't w:HTML or w:XHTML contain tags or meta-tags for connecting a document to a point (or an area) on earth.

ecoregion DTD is good place to start.

This would be supergroovy if search engines supported searching for words with results ordered by physical location (very heavy search indeed, I've studied a course on GIS, and even done some work in that area, and I can tell you that multiple 1-dimensional search keys in relational algebra (that's like what the RDBMS translates SQL into before it is executed) is a picnic compared to even simplified 2-dimensional indexes, let alone if we want accurate real world 3d indexing (Buildings etc. have multiple floors you know.))

Now I have just one thought. Forget the web, let's do it for Wikipedia and the rest of the Web can catch up someday, maybe.

Throw in a standardised way of marking times up and voila: We have spatio-temporal data, that can be grouped and searched in numerous ways, if someone just coded the search engine and if we had some spare processing power for this tedious task.

    spacetime DTD is doing this
p2pmap also is thinking of adopting it

Thanks, I did. Mostly things already discussed but useful here for those who read this blog.
Is there going to be a way to govern this thing other than talking to you on a blog? I like 'leverage points' as used on meta.wikipedia.org to watch/steer wikipedia project - very low-overhead, based on ecology model. Very applicable here as you try to change resourcing, production, distribution, consumption, and waste systems. Also see Jim Moore on 'assembly rules' for the 'second superpower'.
Well it seems we need something like w:Wikipedia:Village pump. Must think of a name for it.

    Blog started on 18.3.2003
