MaidSafe (.net) is a radically new approach to the networking and computational needs of people on planet Earth.

MAID == Massive Array of Internet Disks SAFE == Secure Access for Everyone

MaidSafe consists of the MaidSafe networks and the MaidSafe apps.

The mysterious incorporated Ltd/Llc entity behind the development of the network and it's API has donated all it's patents and code to the human kind.

MaidSafe has it's internal cryptocurrency called SafeCoin. It is mineable by providing non-NOP CPU cycles and bandwidth x time x utilisation rate for the MaidSafe network and farmable by providing major diskspace. Currently it is unclear whether SafeCoin will be of value in the sense of being exchangeable with other crypto- and conventional currencies but if the bookies aren't considering buying some SafeCoin to rig the answer of the bet to "Yes."
