A permission-based model of edits, votes and bets assumes that one needs an identity and some association with, or approval by, a power structure, before one can participate. This is the most common model used in lists, blogs and wikis. However, some think it is contrary to the spirit of wikis, which like to prefer to rely on soft security or fast revert or troll-friendly tactics (note: these are not the same thing!).

Some wiki code includes permissions, like tikiwiki and increasingly mediawiki. Others like MoinMoinWiki, VeryQuickWiki, UseMod or GetWiki will probably avoid implementing such models, and may favour a more faction-driven model.
