Trolls suggest we must get all friends of this planet or even just some body that lives on it, working on these projects. If they already work on something closely related, we must convince them to work on these aspects specifically, since they are the key to getting what we need done, done, in time.

There is little time left. The w:ape genocide is proceeding. When their culture is gone, we too will go. We cannot save ourselves without them.

A house elf is a friendly troll. Just like mom at home, they are generally not paid. They tend to do several things at the same time, such as chatting on the phone to their friend, typing on a keyboard, supervising the kids work, thinking they should not forget to make the pie for dinner, and paying the phone bill; thus forgetting sometimes that apples are necessary to make an apple pie.

Paid trolls think they are great consumers, because they have time to go shopping while the babies elves are at school. For this reason, they are good cible for advertisment and primary victims of propaganda. They are generally dedicated to their family, both because it is their duty, their role, and their fullfilment, but also because they have no revenu themselves, so are just tied to their employer.

Do not forget to pat your house elf, feed him crumbs. But no new socks !
House Elfhttps://develop.consumerium.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Patrick&diff=13658User talk:Patrick2003-06-15T11:55:29Z
House Elf:

I've been thinking that we need at least two lists. One for developers, one for the interested.

0. nowhere - manage the entire project using a wiki - meta.wikipedia.org should actually be running Wikipedia
- the "mailing list process" is only a way for a cabal to take over.

1. http://sourceforge.net (problems if we are going to have multiple projects)

2. http://groups.yahoo.com/ (the echelon will have us - they have everything anyway though)

3. http://pingviini.net (requires me to bug our root and do some configuration)
::I guess using Mailman like the 'pedia does is the best alternative Juxo 08:25 Jun 12, 2003 (EEST)

:I have a problem with the definition given by WWF, as it add to this one "with boundaries that approximate the original extent of natural communities prior to major land-use change". I think this approach tends to consider that these areas were static (which is only true on a very small time scale) and the preanthropic areas were the "right" ones (when thinking in terms of biodiversity conservation). Besides, on some continents, it is likely major land-use change occured quite a long time ago. I think they focus too much on what would have been expected to be found given local conditions, "if" human had had no impact whatsoever.

:This is not dreamland, this is consumerium. I question defining ecoregion more as a potentiality than a reality. Both are important, but if ecoregions are defined with that limitation in mind, trade issues, borders issues, will perhaps not be addressed very well.
::I think there must be strong visions of what this can do, so I support using ecoregions and whole-planet systems (atmosphere, climate) being as the basis of all ecology risk information, while country, trade, border questions must be how you deal with social risk. There's really no other way.
:::I agree with house elf (142) on the separation of area of denomination for social risk and ecology risk, though some further distinctions must be made to assess social risk eg. free zones (zones with special tax and labor law exemptions like some textile heavy free zones in middle america (fevelas?)
:::Further solid waste and emissions (aerosolised or liquid pollution) must be treated as different cases since emissions don't follow national or other borders, but are a global issue. I have no expertese in this area, so I'm hoping someone else will look into this waste and emission assesment issue.
An ecoregion is defined as being a cartographical delineation of distinct ecological areas, land or water, identified by its geology, topography, soils, vegetation, climate conditions, a distinct assemblage of natural communities and species, water resources, as well as anthropic factors.

World Wildlife Fund ecologists currently divide the land surface of the Earth into 8 major ecozones containing 867 smaller terrestrial ecoregions. The ecozones are very well-defined, following major continental boundaries, while the ecoregions are subject to more change and controversy. WWF add to the general definition that boundaries of an ecoregion "approximate the original extent of natural communities prior to major land-use change".

Some propose the ecoregions as stable borders for w:bioregional democracy initiatives.
Welcome to Consumerium House Elf. I hope you enjoy contributing to the cause. Juxo 23:21 May 6, 2003 (EEST)

Good evening. Thanks for your welcome. I have probably not understood what you want to do with consumerium yet; so my apologies for any misplaced article.

:No prob. Your point on Talk:Procruste is an important one. We just should move the discussion elsewhere.

::where ?

Biowaste and non-recyclage : yes, it is stupid. I do not know whether the grey bin is further looked into, and bio waste put apart from non degradable. I do not think so. Perhaps later, we will have an pink bin for the biowaste, and keep the grey for the non-degradable.

: I've been thinking that there should be accurate information on recycling to avoid excess work for those who recycle (eg. If beverage cartons are just burnt to produce heat and avoid land filling, then there is no need to wash them thoroughly, on the other hand if they are used to produce some "new" material, then having a clean recycled material would be important. This is maybe not an Consumerium issue, and should be addressed by local waste disposal/recycling authorities/operatives, but it's been on my mind. Maybe here is an thread for a new feature. Hmmm. I'll write some on it soon.

::yes. Please do. Idea : the thorough cleaning might not only be a recycling issue, but also a health issue. A yellow recycling bin is emptied only once a week (should I mention the garbage men did not pick it up on the 1rst of may ?), then the content waits in a storage area... Microorganisms (among others) will likely grow. Potentially a health issue for the ones handling the stuff later in the process.

I am not sure though GM products is a good idea. As I explained, there is a confusion between the GMO (which is sometimes directly consumed) and the product generated by the GMO (which is sometimes not GM at all).

: Hmm. I'm not familiar with GM issues at all. I just feel that it's an issue to many consumers (including myself)

----
Would you perhaps like to reveal where you are from and what do you do in genral. We have these couple of trolls (eg. see: 142.177.X.X) around that just use IP-addresses and it's a little annoying, since it's impossible to communicate with them in a normalised manner (talk pages, email, IM...).
a sort of a troll fighting against standardization...
----
Shouldn't this article be in Wikipedia. This isn't really relevant to our goal

----

Well...I did not mention it was also a kamasutra position, which "would" have been irrelevant here...

But...I had the feeling it was relevant here, as I believe one of the threat a consumer is meeting is the attempt to reduce him/her to one standard.

:Homogenity is very good for the capitalist market economy, since everybody will work/consume much harder to gain some difference from the rest of the people, if everyone desires the same things. Heterogenity on the other hand is better for the planet since people don't have to strive so much to feel oneself as an individual, thus reducing the ecological strain caused by people.

Such as most food portions being adapted to a family of four. Or directing a whole population to eat one product rather than a variety, or for everyone to eat more salty than before to increase drinks sales. To feed everyone with Mac Donald, even if that require small adaptations depending on countries. hum

:HumHum. The consumers get what they want or they get what the marketing people believe the consumers could be tricked to believe to want. No?

::Very true. Now, if you are single, marketing people will have a tough time convincing one, that he wants to eat the same dinner four days in a row. But...I had the feeling it was relevant here, as I believe one of the threat a consumer is meeting is the attempt to reduce him/her to one standard. Such as most food portions being adapted to a family of four. Or directing a whole population to eat one product rather than a variety, or for everyone to eat more salty than before to increase drinks sales. To feed everyone with Mac Donald, even if that require small adaptations depending on countries. hum
House Elfhttps://develop.consumerium.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Procruste&diff=528Talk:Procruste2003-05-06T22:19:42Z
House Elf:

Procrustes (or Procuste) was a robber of Attica, who placed all who fell into his hands upon an iron bed. If they were longer than the bed, he cut off the legs; if shorter, he stretched them till they fitted it. Any attempt to reduce men to one standard, one way of thinking, or one way of acting, is called placing them on Procrustes' bed, and the person who makes the attempt is called Procrustes.

A procruste is also an insect (coleopter), found all over Europe. He is a predator and feed on other coleopters, snails, slugs, caterpillars or mature fruits. He lives below rocks, in humid forests where he hides below moss. When he is bothered by another living being, he release by anus a very smelly odor (butyric acid), this compensates its lack of wings and give it them to escape.
House Elfhttps://develop.consumerium.org/w/index.php?title=Procrustes%27_Bed&diff=13575Procrustes' Bed2003-05-06T22:13:19Z
House Elf: moved to "Procruste"

e-waste (never spelled with a capital E) is waste from electronics. It is often toxic waste. Also some types of electronics like cell phones are thrown away on average once a year. Many projects focus on electronics re-use and electronics recycling, and electronics standards to minimize obsolescence. One such is Project_Procrustes.
----

Google does not know Project_Procrustes as described here, where can it be found? Should I understand this as a critique to my suggestion to using Java as the programming language. I know it's not the most ecological in terms of performance. Juxo 22:00 May 6, 2003 (EEST)

Yesterday evening, I needed to put the trash outside. It was getting smelly. It is quite a job since our wastes have to be selected and put apart. Hum...glass must be brought outside next street, in the green container;paper, plastic and tins in the yellow container (after thorough cleaning), fruits, veggies, oily stuff and non recyclables in the grey container. Bulbs in the big box at the top of the shelf, batteries in the box hidden in the shoe storage, I must remember to bring the old broken oven to the public landfill. I am lucky waste water just goes down the drain. I must not forget to keep the bottle plastic tops for the money gathering for sick refugees, and the wine bottle corks for school....

These are tough times for House Elves. Very hard to remember all this without making mistakes.
House Elfhttps://develop.consumerium.org/w/index.php?title=GM&diff=530GM2003-05-06T16:45:57Z
House Elf:

A w:GMO is an artificially engineered living organism, whose genome has been modified. Modern biotechnological techniques allow to pick up one or several genes on one organism (bacteria, virus, animal, plant) to insert it in another organism. The technique used is different from traditional breeding, as it may create new organisms previously unknown in nature and as it allows crossing between species.

GMOs production and use are very controversial topics, and some consider it a major issue that consumers be ultimately the ones to choose whether they accept them or not.

A consumer may be
* a person using a GMO to produce a good (e.g. a farmer using GM corn seed)
* or a person consuming a good made from a GMO (e.g. a vegetarian eating a soya steak made from GM soya plant)

This right to decide is meaningfull only when
* consumers are provided enough information to make up their mind on the topic : e.g. what is a GMO, what are the potential or proved benefits, what are the potential or proved ecological, sociological or economical negative impacts of GMO production and use
* consumers are able to give a w:feedback to the producer of the GMO or to the user of the GMO producing the final good.
* consumers are able to have impact on the legal decisions as regards GMO experiments, production, use, traceability and labelling
* consumers are provided information about which products contains (or do not contain) GMO and which products were produced (or not produced) by GMOs
* consumers are given the opportunity to purchase the products they chose to consume, preferably at similar costs for the two channels
